MECHANIC II

To perform the full range of minor and major mechanical repairs on automobiles, motorcycles, small engines and other power-driven equipment.

Receives general supervision from a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. Exercises no supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical problems on city automobiles, motorcycles and a variety of small engine equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws and other related equipment.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tune up engines by replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors.
  • Prepare and replace components such as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.
  • Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, air conditioning systems, power steering and cooling systems.
  • Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes.
  • Respond to service calls; make temporary repairs, pick up and deliver vehicles to the garage.
Experience

Two years of experience performing minor and major vehicle and equipment repair duties comparable to that of a Mechanic I in the City of Jackson.

Educational Requirements
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, diploma or GED.
  • Specialized training in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
License or Certificate
  • Maintain possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Possession of National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification as a Master Automobile Technician or equivalent.
