Position: Materials Inspector - Jackson (ABET/Non-ABET)

Final date to receive applications: 7/24/26. Will consider waiver of ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering for materials inspection related experience.

Overview

The materials inspector samples and tests general construction and maintenance materials to ensure compliance with specifications. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Samples and tests general construction materials such as steel, pipe, paint, asphalt, and cement to determine if materials conform to specifications and approves or rejects material for intended use.
  • Samples and tests fine and coarse aggregate production for quality and gradation specification compliance at quarries supplying materials for department projects and approves or rejects material.
  • Prepares samples for bituminous trial mixes; coordinates with contractor on trial mix information.
  • May perform duties of inspector in charge at plants producing bituminous mixtures to determine if the material produced conforms to specifications and approves or rejects the material.
  • May perform inspections of prestressed or precast concrete and special sampling and testing of materials required on federal aid projects.
Minimum Qualifications – Non‑ABET
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field OR
  • 8 years of experience in materials or construction inspection, or related field.
  • Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.
Minimum Qualifications – ABET
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university curriculum.
  • Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
  • OSHA 10‑Hour Certification required within 90 days.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.
Salary

Entry salary: $52,511.52 (Non‑ABET) or $67,307.04 (ABET)
Intermediate salary: $56,712.48 (Non‑ABET) or $72,691.68 (ABET)
Senior salary: $61,249.44 (Non‑ABET) or $78,506.88 (ABET)

Special Working Conditions
  • Job requires moderate physical activity.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
