Position: Licensed Teacher - Math or SPED Certification Preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills & Education

Education:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) from a four‑year college or university; one to two years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations:
Valid Tennessee Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements; valid state teacher’s license.

Physical Demands

This position requires the staff person to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, knead, crouch, or crawl, and talk and hear. The staff person must also be able to occasionally lift and/or move 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities are required, including close, distant and peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The staff person must also be able to perform a physical restraint on a student using the authorized technique designated by the program and only as a last resort for the protection of the student or others.

Work Environment

The students in this program are termed “At Risk” youth who have been exposed to either the legal or social service system. During the performance of one’s duties, a staff person may be asked inappropriate questions, be subjected to displays of socially inappropriate behaviors, and encounter the use of profanity and sexually explicit language. These students may have a history of violent or assaultive behaviors that could be demonstrated during their stay.

Staff persons may be exposed to racial slurs, derogatory comments, sexually suggestive phrases, or threats of physical harm from students toward either staff or their families. There will be occasions when staff will be exposed to the elements of nature and may be expected to provide occasional transportation as required by program needs.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and serve as a positive role model for youth and peers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements individualized academic programs, performing formal and informal assessments of academic achievement, social‑emotional development, and vocational skills according to governmental and organizational guidelines.
  • Prepares materials, individualized lesson plans, and activities according to assessment goals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of effective instructional techniques by using a wide variety of materials and mediums of delivery and avoiding overuse of any one medium.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of IEP and treatment‑planning process by reviewing referral and assessment data, preparing for IEP meetings, providing current, specific data, creating appropriate goals and objectives, developing and employing interventions, monitoring and evaluating student progress, and sharing information.
  • Manages the classroom to maintain a safe, secure, and effective learning environment by providing structure, clear expectations, and consistency; implements expectations and consequences as outlined in the behavior‑management plan.
  • Maintains a firm, fair, and consistent approach to instruction; promotes student involvement by reinforcing positive behaviors as outlined in the behavior‑management plan for the facility and classroom.
  • Anticipates potential behavior problems by maintaining line‑of‑sight supervision of assigned students at all times and assessing their behavior patterns.
  • Ensures the rights of all students are observed and protected through appropriate communication, proper de‑escalation techniques, and correct physical restraint methods when necessary.
  • Projects a positive role‑model image for students and colleagues by participating as a team member, cooperating with staff, demonstrating compromise and appropriate expression of opinions, attending staff meetings as required, and utilizing the chain‑of‑command to follow organizational policies.
  • Maintains appropriate relationships with students by treating them with respect, eliciting student interest and cooperation, and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
