Overview

The Bible elective program in Hamilton County Schools helps middle and high school students gain a broad appreciation of the Bible as a significant work of literature and an influential text in the formation of western civilization. The academic study of the Bible provides students with a broader awareness of ancient cultures and allows them to better understand biblical allusions in various works of literature, art, and music.

Additionally, students engage with the many historical events recorded in the Bible as well as the diverse social customs of the ancient world.

Through studying the Bible, students gain an increased understanding of the text’s influence on culture, customs, and world history, while also learning to critically engage with this rich literary work without bias for or against any religious group or denomination.

School Environment

Ooltewah Middle School (6-8) is located in Ooltewah, TN, just outside of Chattanooga. Teachers can expect a supportive and collaborative climate, including:

  • New Teacher Academy led by our instructional coach, which meets monthly to discuss ideas and solutions
  • Mentor teacher for new teachers
  • Each teacher is a member of a grade level team, and each core teacher has a content partner for weekly collaborative planning
  • Instructional Coach who provides job-embedded professional development
Responsibilities
  • Teaching & Learning: Deeply understand Tennessee state standards and establish clear learning targets for every lesson. Build rigorous and aligned assessments and consistently implement instructional best practices. Follow Hamilton County Schools’ instructional framework, including:

    • Setting High Expectations
    • Building a Productive Classroom Culture
    • Responsive Teaching and Learning
  • Classroom Culture: Build a safe and productive classroom culture. Positive relationships are evident, procedures are clear, and classroom is secure for learning to unfold. Student and teacher interactions promote a growth mindset.
  • Family & Community: Consistently develop strong relationships with students’ families while diligently informing parents of expectations, positive news, and concerns about their children. Provide opportunities for parents to be involved in their children’s learning.
  • Professional Responsibilities: Actively participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) with colleagues to improve teaching and student learning. Reflect on instruction and leadership while contributing ideas, expertise, and time to the mission and goals of the school.
Qualifications

  • Able to be a positive team-player and communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, students, and families
  • Open to being coached and receiving feedback to advance learning and growth for students
  • Professional with high personal standards and integrity
  • Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 12 college/university credit hours in biblical studies (examples include Old Testament Survey, New Testament Survey, Life of Jesus, Minor Prophets)
  • Tennessee Teaching Certification:
    For middle school teaching candidates, a valid Tennessee teaching certification with an endorsement in a middle grades academic content area, Bible, English (6-12), or history (6-12) (or willingness to pursue certification as a job-embedded licensure candidate) is required. For high school teaching candidates, a valid Tennessee teaching certification with an endorsement in Bible, English, or history (or willingness to pursue certification as a job-embedded licensure candidate) is required.

    If you hold a teaching license in another state, you must apply for a Tennessee teaching license.
Compensation

Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.

Salary Scale

This position may be eligible for an increase in total compensation. The Differentiated Compensation Plan applies to designated schools and hard-to-staff positions. Please see (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). for more details.
