Position

Simon & Schuster is seeking an Industrial Engineer for its distribution operations facilities. Reporting into the VP of Distribution Operations, this Engineer will be responsible for optimizing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and improving productivity by applying engineering methods to the facility s processes and systems. Key duties include process analysis, facility layout design, labor standard development, and project management for new technologies or automation.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement automation systems, including conveyor control and material handling solutions.
  • Project Management:
    Lead and manage cross-functional projects of various sizes, such as installing Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), implementing new material handling equipment (MHE), or introducing automation and robotics.
  • Develop and maintain labor standards through time studies and industry best practices.
  • Create and maintain facility layouts and engineering designs using CAD software.
  • Lead and manage engineering and process improvement projects across departments.
  • Data Analysis & Metrics:
    Collect and analyze performance data using tools like time studies and work sampling and develop key performance indicator (KPI) reports and dashboards for management review.
  • Quality and Safety:
    Implement quality control procedures to minimize errors, waste, and damages, and evaluate job safety through ergonomic analysis and risk reduction.
  • Cost Analysis & Justification:
    Conduct analyses and provide cost justifications for capital project requests and new equipment purchases to ensure return on investment (ROI).
  • Training and Documentation:
    Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training materials, and train employees and supervisors on new processes and systems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of previous experience in a distribution, logistics, or manufacturing environment, with a background in process improvement methodologies like Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma, is highly preferred.
  • Proven experience with automation implementation and conveyor systems.
  • Strong knowledge of WMS platforms and warehouse process integration.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
  • Experience developing and implementing engineered labor standards.
  • Strong project management and reporting skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Preferred But Not Required
  • Certified Professional in Industrial Engineering (CPIE) certification
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification
  • Lean certification
  • Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certification
