Senior Electric Distribution Designer, Energy, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

As we grow our Electric Power Delivery practice, Halff is seeking experienced Senior Electric Distribution Designers to join us in our San Antonio, Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth, TX offices. The ideal candidate would bring at least 8 years of experience designing distribution designs for both overhead and underground electric distribution lines for TNMP. This is an excellent opportunity to progress your career by applying your knowledge and expertise to working with co‑ops, municipalities, or investor‑owned utilities in designing new overhead and underground electric distribution lines, relocating and upgrading existing lines, and designing substation distribution takeoffs.

You will have the opportunity to take on a broader role including expanding your technical capabilities, mentoring less experienced designers, and seeking continuous improvements to our project execution process. This position offers an excellent career development opportunity for someone looking to grow with Halff, with potential for both business and personal growth, as well as ownership in the firm.

What you will do:
  • Preparing designs, construction packages, and bills of material for progressively complex distribution line projects and providing engineering support to the full project life cycle from concept through construction to as‑builts.
  • Performing on‑site visits as necessary for determining routes, staking, right‑of‑way requirements, locates, and identifying all existing conditions in preparation for designs.
  • Acting as customer point‑of‑contact throughout the work management process by receiving and responding to customer phone calls and emails and updating the tracking system.
  • Creating, editing, analyzing and implementing gas facility data updates from job construction sketches, as‑built sheets, or mobile applications using standardized TNMP symbology and data placement business rules related to civic improvement, rehab or other existing work.
  • Meeting for preconstruction meetings and/or addressing any issues that may occur during construction.
  • Performing electric power calculations for determining capacity and effective sizing of distribution material and equipment.
  • Preparing mockups and designs as needed.
  • Performing QA/QC of distribution line designs and construction packages prepared by other designers.
  • Working with the Project Managers and other associated teams to meet deadlines, aid in engineering decisions, and collaborate on projects.
  • Assisting in the development of distribution engineering design philosophies, standards, details, and specifications.
  • Continuously seeking improvements to our project execution processes, including safety by design, quality, and consistency.
  • Mentoring, and/or training Designers, CADD Technicians and administrative staff.
  • Reporting to client office or Halff office daily.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
What you will need:
  • Must have a minimum of 8 years of experience designing distribution designs for both overhead and underground electric distribution lines for TNMP.
  • Experience with Distribution Design Studio (DDS) required.
  • Proficient in creating plan and profile distribution designs in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with CAD‑based or GIS‑based design tools for electric power infrastructure.
  • High‑level interpersonal relationship, communication, facilitation, team building, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience applying industry codes and standards, including NESC and NEC.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and confidence interacting closely with clients, management, and design teams.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Embrace being an active participant of our employee‑owned firm.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal behaviours toward TNMP, associates, and customers.
