What You’ll Be Doing

  • Perform all aspects of complete designs for small and large electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods.
  • Utilize department design and drafting standards and interpret project scope, specifications, and design criteria.
  • Recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
  • Provide on‑site assistance during startup.
  • Produce estimate‑level preliminary designs and material take‑offs appropriate to the estimate’s level.
  • Prepare detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials.
  • Organize calculations neatly for efficient checking and for use by drafters/designers.
  • Generate designs that optimize construction materials, ease of construction, and meet client expectations.
  • Check calculations performed by other engineers for accuracy, code compliance, specifications, and good engineering practice.
  • Assist the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems.
  • Supply sufficient sketches and details necessary for completion of engineering drawings.
  • Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth flow of vital information.
  • Advise the senior engineer on design or scope changes.
  • Assist other engineers in developing and assembling scopes, drawings, and specifications into a “package,” enabling purchase inquiries for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing.
  • Review and check vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for electrical/instrumentation input.
  • Develop construction specifications.
  • Review fabrication drawings and other construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Gather field data, check tie‑ins, and provide construction support as required.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis to complex designs.
  • Produce installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach.
  • Develop small work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support.
Ideal Background, Education, and Experience
  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineering registration highly preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
  • Ability to perform lighting level calculations, voltage drop calculations, and determine motor control center loading.
  • Ability to size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power applications; route conduit and cable tray; calculate tray and conduit fill.
  • Ability to determine load center unit substation loading and to create accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
  • Ability to size control valves using appropriate software and develop specifications and data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, and actuated valves.
  • Familiarity with ISA standards for instrumentation and controls.
  • Proficient in developing equipment specifications for motor control centers, variable frequency drives, induction and synchronous motors, load center unit substations.
  • Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for all electrical deliverables.
  • Ability to develop a construction cost estimate, detailed engineering schedule, and man‑hour budget for small projects or large project areas.
  • Ability to determine construction material quantities.
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD, Micro Station, or both).
