Role

Job Title: Tax Accountant

Pay Band: 4

Location: Morocco and Tunisia

Contract Type: Indefinite Contract Local

Salary (Morocco): MAD 9,153.00 gross monthly

Salary (Tunisia): TND 2,155.00 gross monthly

Purpose of the job

Responsible for ensuring tax compliance in Tunisia and Morocco, including preparing and filing accurate tax returns with supporting analysis, reconciliations, and records. Acts as the main contact for local tax matters, supporting audits, liaising with authorities, and assisting local teams with operational tax queries.

Responsibilities
  • Tax Compliance – Preparation and filing of Tax returns (VAT, CIT, WHT, Stamp Duty and other applicable taxes) in a timely manner in line with local legislation. Ensure the tax return is approved internally ahead of filing.
  • Assisting with system testing associated with tax-related changes ensuring systems are tax compliant.
  • Monitoring tax calendar, including all tax payments, to ensure compliance with tax authority deadlines.
  • Preparation of tax balance sheet reconciliations by set datelines.
  • Monitoring tax queries, ensuring prompt response to all issues within strict time frames.
  • Tax Advisory – Advisory on queries related to taxation issues, on tax-related system changes, and on process-related changes brought in by amendments or introduction of tax laws. Analyze information reported to authorities and identify risks for BC.
  • Meeting with Stakeholders – Conduct regular meetings with stakeholders to understand processes and identify gaps due to changes in tax laws; keep stakeholders updated with amendments.
  • Documentation Review – Procurement and Sales – Review invoices for compliance with tax laws; reconcile purchase/sale registers with returns.
  • Review of tax updates – Review clarifications or communications from authorities regarding BC applicability; communicate updates to stakeholders; implement system/process changes as required and suggest compliance steps.
  • Tax Audit – Ensure documents are stored as required; support tax audits with necessary documentation and analysis; assist the MENA Regional Tax Lead/Global Tax Team with communications to authorities.
  • Other country work – May be required to work for other countries in the MENA region as needed.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Tunisia and Moroccan GAAP.
  • Strong Excel skills (including pivot tables) and knowledge of SAP.
  • Ability to explain complex financial data to non-finance audiences.
  • Ability to work under pressure with good time and data management; experience working in virtual teams.
  • Minimum/Essential:
    Experience in Tax.
  • Desirable:
    Experience in a tax consultancy firm and SAP proficiency.
Requirements

Pre-existing, legal right to work in Tunisia or Morocco is required. Mobility/relocation/visa sponsoring support will not be provided. British Council supports hybrid working subject to line management approval and ability to provide appropriate service; this may not be suitable for all roles but can be explored at interview.
