Position: PROBATION OFFICER

The purpose of this classification is to supervise and counsel probationers. Duties include, but are not limited to: interviewing probationers to obtain needed information; providing probationers with program requirements; answering questions; maintaining files and logs of probationers; and performing additional tasks as assigned by the Director Court Administration.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Receive client referrals of probationers from various Courts.
  • Supervises and counsels probationers on their responsibilities.
  • Conducts pre and post-sentence investigations on probation clientele; conducts initial interviews with clients.
  • Refers probationers to other agencies as needed and monitors progress.
  • Operates computer to maintain files on probationers, record sentencing information, perform records checks, etc.
  • Compiles reports concerning probationers for Court and departmental information.
  • Maintains files on probationers; updates file information on any changes made pertaining to court dates, new/different address, place of employment, etc.
  • Interviews clients to obtain needed information; provides probation information to clients; verifies employment and/or other information relating to probationers as needed.
  • Communicates and coordinates efforts with judges, attorneys, victims and the departmental director concerning probationers.
  • Appears in Court as needed concerning cases involving probation clientele.
  • Logs and documents all calls, office visits, and other contacts received from probationers; logs and documents all outgoing calls regarding probationers.
  • Prepares violation warrants against probationers as needed for violations of probation.
  • Responds to any violation of probation or electronic monitoring alert.
Additional Job Functions
  • Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, or related field; with two (2) years experience working with various Court systems; or any equivalent combination, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of Law Enforcement equipment.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and a variety of office machines including a computer, copier, printer, answering machine, telephone, facsimile machine, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.

    Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
  • INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:
    Requires the ability of speaking to convey or exchange administrative information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers.
  • LANGUAGE ABILITY:
    Requires ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.
  • INTELLIGENCE:
    Requires the ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to this position.
  • VERBAL APTITUDE:
    Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and elected officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
