Lab Assistant - Health Sciences Job Summary
Jackson State Community College (JSCC) is seeking a skilled and student-centered Lab Assistant for Allied Health Programs to support hands‑on instruction and laboratory operations for Electrocardiography (EKG), Phlebotomy, Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA), and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) courses.
The Lab Assistant plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, well‑organized, and clinically relevant learning environment that supports student skill development and program quality. This position works closely with program faculty to prepare laboratories, assist with skills instruction, support competency testing, and maintain compliance with healthcare and accreditation standards.
In support of the college’s mission to expand workforce training and access in rural communities, the Lab Assistant may also support instruction and lab activities at offsite JSCC centers.
- Prepare, set up, and maintain instructional laboratories for Health Science courses.
- Assist faculty during lab and skills-based instruction, providing demonstrations and student support as appropriate.
- Support student practice of clinical skills by assisting with student competencies, skills check-offs, and practical examinations under faculty supervision.
- Ensure laboratory equipment, supplies, and manikins are properly cleaned, stored, and maintained according to safety and infection control standards.
- Monitor lab safety practices and report concerns to faculty or program leadership.
- Assist with tracking student compliance requirements as directed (e.g., immunizations, background checks, drug screenings, CPR certification).
- Support preparation of students for clinical placement by reinforcing professional behavior, safety standards, and procedural expectations.
- Maintain accurate records related to lab usage, competencies, and equipment inventory.
- Support Health Science programs including day, evening, and offsite offerings as assigned.
- Assist with orientation sessions, open labs, skills remediation, mock interviews, mock clinicals, and student review sessions.
- Other duties as assigned specifically related to career and technical education
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Current healthcare-related certification(s) relevant to Phlebotomy, EKG, Medical Assisting, Nursing Assistant, or patient care.
- Clinical or instructional experience in a healthcare or allied health setting.
- Associate’s degree
- Knowledge of basic clinical procedures and patient care practices relevant to allied health education.
- Familiarity with lab safety, infection control, and OSHA standards.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Commitment to student success, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Understanding of FERPA, HIPAA, and student confidentiality requirements.
- Willingness and ability to travel to offsite centers to support lab instruction and program needs.
