Job Summary and Mission
The Tooling Technician (Machinist) provides repair, reconditioning, and regular maintenance to tooling and fixtures on the day shift (Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm).
Key Job Responsibilities- Coordinates tooling repair including press die repair, reconditioning, and regular maintenance according to blueprints, schematics, and Kennametal guidelines.
- Utilizes computer‑controlled machining lathes, grinders, polishers, and EDMs to resurface and repair press dies and other fixtures.
- Repairs all tooling and fixtures as needed to ensure maximum uptime, follows repair schedules required by production and delivery, and communicates regularly with the Pressing Supervisor to meet SQDCP metrics.
- Coordinates outsourcing of tooling repair that cannot be repaired in house, follows all safety guidelines, and uses Lock Out Tag Out procedures when necessary to ensure safe setup of equipment.
- Commit to working safely and understand all safety procedures.
- Handle deviations in routine according to operating procedures and/or work instructions.
- Ensure that repairs meet the requirements of the tooling blueprint.
- Schedule repairs to meet daily departmental production goals and coordinate similar repairs to minimize turnaround time.
- Be reliable and dependable.
- Communicate safety, quality, and product issues with the Pressing Supervisor and team members across shifts.
- Assist in controlling access to the tool room by unauthorized persons.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
- 2‑ or 4‑year Technical Degree preferred.
- Experience working in an environment with controlled temperatures and dust collection systems.
- Approximately eight hours standing with two break opportunities per eight‑hour work period.
- Intermittent walking, reaching, sitting, and bending.
- Lifting insert trays weighing no more than thirty‑three (33) pounds.
- Utilize mathematical knowledge, including trigonometry, to troubleshoot and repair tooling issues with press dies, grinding anvils, prisms, and other fixtures using blueprints, schematics, and overlays.
- Schedule repairs by urgency of production need and select the appropriate machinery for repairs while following all safety policies and procedures.
- Provide operator‑level preventive maintenance on tool room equipment and functionally test all repairs before releasing them to production.
- Use blueprints and schematics to set up machines for repairs.
- Perform detailed inspection of tooling to troubleshoot concerns with finished products, utilizing scopes, optical comparators, and Keyence measuring devices.
