Role Overview

Encompass Health is looking for a Nurse Extern to provide individualized, compassionate care to patients in our rehabilitation setting. The role supports the rehabilitation team by assisting patients with daily activities, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring a safe and healthy environment.

• Assist patients with daily activities as delegated by the rehabilitation team.
• Communicate patient concerns and changes in condition to nurses or therapists.
• Document patient information in medical records.
• Obtain vital signs and record them in the electronic medical record.
• Perform special procedures including collection of urine, stool, and sputum.
• Review treatments, ADLs, and hygiene with patients and families.
• Assist patients with feeding and attend Therapeutic Dining Group as indicated.
• Assist patients with body mechanics.
• Help maintain a clean and healthy environment for patients.
• Assist with equipment care.

• BLS (CPR) required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Part-time or full-time active student status.
• Successful completion of the first term of nursing courses of a professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program.
• Current enrollment and good academic standing in a professional RN or LPN/VN program.
• Initial term must include fundamentals of nursing or course equivalent.
• Submission of one or two instructor evaluations indicating satisfactory performance of fundamental nursing skills.
• Successful completion of preceptor tool and core competency at 90 days and annually.
• Proof of continued enrollment and passing grades each semester until graduation, maintaining good academic standing.
• One year experience in inpatient clinical setting preferred.
