Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology), ecology, sustainability, life sciences, environmental health, pre‑medicine, engineering, or other acceptable science or natural resource related field.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment in some positions.
  • Applicants for the TDEC Environmental Scientist 1
    * or Health Physicist 1
    * in the Division of Radiological Health must successfully complete the training courses offered by the Division of Radiological Health.
  • Performing geologic duties: must have completed required college coursework or hold a current Geologic license from Tennessee or a reciprocal state.
  • Biologist positions: require a bachelor’s degree with at least 36 quarter hours (or 24 semester hours) in biology or related areas.

Responsibilities Resolving Conflicts and Negotiating with Others
  • Investigates complaints, develops corrective recommendations, and, if necessary, initiates legal action to enforce compliance with established standards, laws, rules, regulations, or policies.
Drafting, Laying Out, and Specifying Technical Devices, Parts, and Equipment
  • Prepares documentation such as permits, designs, layouts, blueprints, soil evaluations, etc., in a concise and defensible manner to meet agency missions.
Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material
  • Conducts inspections to ensure proper installation, maintenance, and operation.
Making Decisions and Solving Problems
  • Determines validity and severity of incidents and identifies appropriate responses.
  • Analyzes available information and recommends solutions to meet regulatory, project, and stakeholder needs.
  • Determines validity and severity of violations and evaluates necessity of enforcement action.
  • Reviews plans and reports to determine future regulatory actions.
Interpreting the Meaning of Information for Others
  • Interprets findings, results, and communicates regulation, policy, and guidance to stakeholders.
  • Prepares publications, reports, technical documents, maps, and plans.
Interacting with Computers
  • Uses statistical programs, scientific instruments, modeling, GIS, databases, word processing, spreadsheets, email, and other software.
  • Generates reports and documents utilizing contemporary computer software.
Processing Information
  • Compiles legally defensible environmental documents.
  • Reviews records, data, operational plans, enforcement action requests, reports, etc.
  • Applies QA/QC parameters as required by accepted methodologies.
  • Prepares statistical/metric reports for aquatic, terrestrial, and wetland assessments.
Analyzing Data or Information
  • Analyzes monitoring records, site inspections, sampling data to assess need for further action and evaluate trends.
  • Prepares plans, maps, or reports of findings related to health and environmental data.
  • Applies mathematical and statistical methods to analyze environmental data.
  • Assists in developing standards and conducting laboratory or field tests.
  • Reviews plans to ensure protection of human health and the environment.
  • Interprets analytical results to determine data quality and usability.
  • Assists in studies of environmental pollution, ionizing radiation, and socioeconomic effects.
Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with Standards
  • Performs inspections and investigations in program areas such as air pollution, water resources, remediation, underground storage tanks, solid waste management, radiological health, natural areas, etc.
