Job Summary
The Campus Police Officer (TCAT – Jackson) is responsible for maintaining a safe learning environment, protecting the assets and interest of the institution, and enforcing laws, policy and regulations. Officer performs a variety of police duties in patrolling assigned area on foot and by motor vehicle to detect crime and to arrest violators; patrolling parking lots and college buildings to ensure security and safety.
Responsibilities- Patrol the campus by foot and motor vehicle.
- Check doors and locks.
- Investigate accidents involving persons or property, report probable cause of accidents, and pursue appropriate courses of action.
- Ensure that all incidents and arrest activities are properly documented.
- Operate law enforcement equipment (including lethal and non-lethal weapons necessary in the performance of required duties).
- Keep records and prepare reports (offense, arrest, fire system, emergency phones, alarm systems, and mechanical equipment).
- Provide a law enforcement response to emergency situations, including safety and illness/injury investigations.
- Support the mission of the Campus Police Department and that of the college.
- Work collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students; responsible for traffic control and enforcement.
- Investigate suspected crimes, report findings, and arrest suspected individuals.
- Make arrests and testify in court proceedings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Chief of Police JSCC.
- Work closely with the President of TCAT – Jackson to ensure operational security of the institution.
- Travel weekly from the main campus in Jackson, TN, to satellite locations of TCAT – Jackson in west Tennessee using an assigned patrol vehicle.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Meet the requirements of TCA 38-8-106 Qualification of Police Officers.
- Meet the requirements of a Certified Police Officer per TCA 38-8-107.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and determine proper course of action.
- Must be able to obtain a clear background check.
- Must be Tennessee POST (Peace Officer Standard & Training) Certified or have a law enforcement certification recognized and accepted by the POST Commission of TN, or ability to become POST certified within 6 months from hire date.
- Must be physically, morally, and psychologically fit to meet the requirements of a Peace Officer in Tennessee.
- Possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
- Must be willing to work different shifts, holidays, and multiple locations if needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field
- Working knowledge of Title IX as it relates to law enforcement, the Clery Act and other federal and state campus safety rules and regulations
- Experience working in a campus safety and security environment, and knowledge of situations unique to college students, events and functions
- Experience in emergency management and safety preparedness in a higher education environment
- Established relationships with local law enforcement agencies
- Strong interpersonal and public relations communication skills; ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Reasoning ability to assess best course of action for security or emergency situations; knowledge of security policies and procedures for campus policing.
- Ability to ascertain facts by personal conduct, observation, and evaluation of records.
- Ability to explain and interpret provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Ability to enforce laws firmly and with respect for the rights of others.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Excellent skills in dealing with the public; quick situational thinking.
- Maintain professionalism at all times and exercise ethics and confidentiality.
- Ability to operate law enforcement equipment.
- Basic knowledge of accident investigation per applicable state and federal laws.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Prolonged periods of standing at times
- Prolonged screen time
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
Pay Rate: $50,000 - $52,680 (Annual salary depending on eligible experience, which is defined by the current compensation plan.)
