Position Summary
Performs mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on JEA vehicles and equipment.
Criteria Education / ExperienceHigh school diploma (GED) with at least four years of experience working with gasoline and diesel engines and successful completion of JEA’s Mechanic Tech Apprentice program OR five years of experience working with gasoline and diesel engines. Demonstrated competence in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment required.
Skills / AbilitiesGood mechanical and teamwork skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Basic computer skills.
Certifications / LicensesMust obtain Tennessee Tank Helper A, B, C Operator Training, Forklift Certification, CFC-12, HFC-134a, and R-1234yf Refrigerant Recycling Service Procedure Certification within 1 year.
Physical Demands- The ability to lift, carry and use heavy tools and materials.
- The ability to climb and perform work from a ladder.
- The ability to safely operate a standard equipped JEA motor vehicle.
- The ability to safely operate specially equipped JEA construction/maintenance equipment.
- The ability to operate JEA field service installation equipment.
- The ability to orally communicate via radio and telephone.
- The ability to walk several miles over rough terrain.
- The ability to enter/exit 22" diameter accesses as well as work in confined spaces.
- The ability to see and read printed material.
Indoor office and outdoor conditions.
DrivingValid Tennessee Class "A" license with air brake and tanker endorsement within six months of employment in this position.
TelephoneMust maintain an operating residential telephone and furnish the number to his/her supervisor.
Essential Functions- Assists in scheduling repairs and service for vehicles and equipment.
- Utilizes repair manuals, electrical wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics to repair and maintain equipment.
- Uses an engine analyzer and other forms of diagnostic equipment to perform tune-ups and to improve performance.
- Uses a multi-meter battery tester to diagnose and repair electrical problems.
- Uses test gauges and meters to diagnose and repair fuel and hydraulic problems.
- Operates a computerized tire balancer to mount and balance tires.
- Utilizes a caliper and micrometer to inspect rotors and drums according to D.O.T. specifications.
- Uses a brake lathe to refinish brake drums and rotors.
- Performs air, electric, and hydraulic brake repairs to meet O.E.M. specifications.
- Repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel engines.
- Repairs or replaces vehicles or equipment lighting and tires according to D.O.T. requirements.
- Welds and fabricates equipment and tools.
- Repairs and maintains heat/air conditioning units on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs minor bodywork and painting on vehicles and equipment.
- Cleans, repairs, and replaces emission control system parts to meet O.E.M. standards.
- Performs repairs on all types of vehicles and equipment and stays abreast of current technology.
- Assists with repairs on all types of equipment, including operating equipment.
- Keeps up-to-date records on all maintenance and repairs.
- Communicates with customers on maintenance related problems.
- Observes all safety procedures and reports violations promptly to supervisor.
- Prepares personal timesheet each pay period for supervisor approval.
- Purchases parts and supplies as needed.
- Manually gauges onsite UST – gasoline, diesel, and used oil.
- Assists with servicing aerial trucks and derrick trucks and performs repairs including hydraulic repairs.
- Makes service calls in the field.
- Reconciles personal procurement card statement for supervisor approval.
- Performs basic housekeeping as required (sweeping, cleaning equipment, etc.)
- Performs additional duties as requested.
