Plant Maintenance Technician Apprentice (Jackson, TN) Position Summary
Performs routine lubrication, cleaning, and maintenance on water and wastewater treatment plants and related equipment/facilities. Assists plant maintenance technicians on water and wastewater system tasks, ranging from housekeeping to technically oriented tasks.
Education/ExperienceHigh school diploma (GED)/ trade school and/or industrial maintenance background experience preferred.
Skills/AbilitiesDemonstrated ability to perform routine maintenance and housekeeping on mechanical and electrical equipment as described in essential functions.
Certifications/LicensesJEA Apprenticeship program (mandatory). This is a four‑year program allowing Plant Maintenance Technician Apprentice to advance to Plant Maintenance Technician. Criteria must be met as outlined in the Apprentice Program.
Physical DemandsThe ability to use a computer keyboard effectively. The ability to orally communicate by phone and person to person. The ability to see and read printed material. The ability to lift, carry, and use heavy tools and materials. The ability to climb ladders and perform work from a ladder at heights up to 200 feet. The ability to safely operate a standard equipped company motor vehicle.
The ability to enter/exit 22" diameter access‑ways and work in confined spaces. The ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time. The ability to walk many miles per day over rough terrain.
Indoor and outdoor conditions. Exposure to 480 voltage power and lower. AC and DC. Exposure to wastewater. Exposure to water/wastewater treatment chemicals: chlorine, sulfur dioxide, hydrofluorsilicic acid, potassium permanganate, and laboratory reagents from suppliers into the feed systems in accordance with all federal and state regulations. Works in permit‑required confined spaces.
DrivingMust have a valid Tennessee Class "D" license. Must obtain a Tennessee Class "B" CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsement (N) and "government only" restriction within 6 months of employment.
TelephoneMust maintain an operating telephone and furnish the number to his/her supervisor.
Essential Functions- Maintains, repairs, and cleans all treatment plants and pump stations, lift stations, and other water/wastewater facilities including but not limited to buildings, pumps, blowers and aerating equipment, traveling bridges, screening equipment, conveying equipment, motors, wells, chemical feeders, valves, control/monitoring equipment, and all other components related to water and wastewater related treatment.
- Performs preventative maintenance, repair, and cleaning of all system water and wastewater storage tanks, pressure reducing valves, air relief valves, altitude valves, and related tools and equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance on motors, wells, and other treatment equipment as assigned.
- Operates pumps and related equipment, pressure washers, air compressors, sand blasters, volt meters, amp probes, trenchers, and a variety of other tools and equipment as trained such as welders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, multiple types of saws, backhoes, tractors, bobcats, etc.
- Maintains accurate written and computer‑based records and prepares reports on machinery and activities.
- Performs the assignments required in the Apprenticeship Program.
- Assists in monitoring work performed by summer employees.
- Observes all safety procedures.
- Responds to emergency calls and participates in weekly call rotations.
- Works overtime as needed on a scheduled basis.
- Assist with installation of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) under guidance.
- Troubleshoots and maintains AC/DC circuits, motor control centers (MCCs), and electrical components while following safety procedures.
- Installs, maintains, and calibrates industrial metering equipment.
- Performs additional duties as requested.
