Position: HEAVY EQUIPMENT DIESEL MECHANIC

To perform entry-level inspections, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and vehicle diagnosis on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered County medium/heavy duty trucks and off-road equipment.

This is a safety sensitive position that requires a drug screen.

Essential Functions

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic I is responsible for the following essential functions:

  • Performs scheduled vehicle and equipment inspections, and preventive maintenance such as changing oil and transmission fluid, differential fluid, replacing filters, lubricating parts, Inspecting and replacing lights, wiper blades, belts, and hoses.
  • Inspects and replaces, mount & balance, and repairs medium/heavy duty and off-road and off-road tires.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs medium/heavy duty and off-road equipment engines, transmissions, fuel, ignition, emission control system and cooling systems.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs medium/heavy duty and off-road electrical, wiring, and computer control systems.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs medium/heavy duty and off-road brake systems, differentials, drive lines, and steering and suspension.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs medium/heavy duty and off-road air conditioning and heating system.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs mower tractor hydraulic system and mower attachments.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs snowplow equipment, salt spreader boxes, and brine tanks.
  • Examines, diagnose problems, service and repairs on trailers and equipment floats.
  • Conducts medium/heavy duty and off-road safety inspections.
  • Performs medium/heavy duty and off-road service calls for repairs and tire service.
  • Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor's Office
  • Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours .
  • Perform other duties as required
Minimum Training & Qualifications
  • High School/GED supplemented by Vocational Training in Diesel Repair or Automotive Repair; with three (3) years' experience in light, medium, heavy-duty repair and maintenance
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Class "D" Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must furnish own hand tools to meet requirements of this job description.
  • Medium/Heavy Truck and Equipment Repair Training.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position
Specialized Knowledge
  • Diesel Engine and Hydraulic Systems Operations
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of alternative fuel and hybrid vehicle technology.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, stays in control of himself/herself in chaotic situations
  • Ability to be observant, to notice details of problems in equipment and machines.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate work to verify if product is satisfactory.
  • Basic understanding of computers, printers and other office equipment
  • Ability to focus and demonstrate great attention to detail
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent moderate effort or almost continuous light physical activity or occasional heavy physical activity (50-100lbs)
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, kneel, climb, twist and reach to perform work on vehicles and machines
  • Exposure to chemicals, solvents and lubricants.
  • Exposure to gasoline and diesel fuel.
  • Risk of hand injuries due to working with hand tools.
  • Exposure to repair shop hazards such as lifting and pulling heavy parts.
  • Exposure to working in inclement weather
