Position Summary
Under the direction of the Building Principal and Special Education Director, the High School Special Education Teacher provides specially designed instruction and related support to students with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and district policy. This position serves as the case manager for assigned students and supports learners across a variety of instructional settings and disability-related needs, including co-taught classrooms, small group instruction, individualized settings, and community-based environments as appropriate.
The Special Education Teacher collaborates with general education staff, related service providers, families, and administrators to ensure students have access to the general education curriculum, make meaningful progress toward individualized goals, and are prepared for postsecondary success.
Essential Responsibilities
IEP Development and Case Management
* Develop, implement, and monitor annual Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP), measurable annual goals, accommodations, modifications, specially designed instruction, transition services, and related services.
* Serve as IEP case manager for assigned students, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and district procedural safeguards and timelines.
* Facilitate IEP meetings and collaborate with students, families, and multidisciplinary team members to develop plans that support academic, behavioral, functional, and postsecondary outcomes.
* Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and Wyoming Content and Performance Standards, adjusting instruction as needed based on data.
Instruction and Student Support
* Provide specially designed instruction tailored to students' individual strengths, needs, and learning profiles across multiple settings (e.g., co-teaching, resource, self-contained, community-based, and inclusive general education environments).
* Differentiate instruction and implement evidence-based practices to ensure access to grade-level content and meaningful participation in the general curriculum.
* Support students with a range of disability categories and needs, including but not limited to academic, behavioral, communication, executive functioning, adaptive, and social-emotional domains.
* Develop and implement positive behavior supports and intervention plans in collaboration with staff and families when needed.
* Monitor student attendance, credit accrual, and engagement, collaborating with families and administration to address barriers to school participation.
* Integrate transition planning and college/career readiness skills into instruction for secondary students.
Collaboration and Consultation
* Collaborate with general education teachers to design inclusive learning environments and implement accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies aligned to student IEPs.
* Provide consultation regarding differentiated instruction, assistive technology, behavior supports, and accessible instructional materials.
* Participate in and implement collaborative co-teaching models beyond one-teach/one-support, including parallel, station, and team teaching as appropriate.
* Work closely with school psychologists, counselors, related service providers, and other specialists to coordinate services and support.
* Maintain ongoing communication with families regarding student progress and programming.
Documentation and Compliance
* Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely records in accordance with state and district requirements.
* Prepare required reports and documentation related to eligibility, IEP implementation, progress reporting, and reevaluation processes.
* Participate in evaluation and reevaluation processes, including reviewing data, contributing to multidisciplinary team reports, and supporting eligibility determinations.
Professional Practice
* Participate in professional learning communities and staff development.
* Stay current with best practices in special education, inclusive instruction, secondary transition planning, and legal compliance.
* Perform other duties as assigned in support of student learning, building and district initiatives.
CERTIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
* Hold or eligible to hold a Wyoming Special Education Generalist K-12 Certificate through the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board.
* Proficient knowledge of IDEA and Wyoming rules that govern the operation of special education programs and services provided to students with disabilities.
