Overview
Provides age and population specific direct clinical care to neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. Delivers patient care according to the Scope of Service for the Emergency Department. Adheres to and participates in the SJH Corporate Compliance Program and Performance Improvement activities.
Responsibilities- Patient Care:
Obtains and reviews patient data using observation, interviewing, interpretation and critical thinking in age-specific and developmentally appropriate manner. Identifies risk factors and ensures patient safety. Implements measures to prevent injury from environmental hazards. Practices autonomously and in accordance with professional nursing standards. Identifies changes in patient status and exercises independent judgment within a multidisciplinary approach. Develops a plan of care unique to each patient, evaluates response to the plan, and sets measurable goals mutually agreed with the patient.
Evaluates patient response to pain management interventions and considers alternative therapies. Demonstrates knowledge of medication action, side effects, and protocols; administers medications safely using two patient identifiers according to policy and procedure. Organizes and prioritizes care for multiple patients with varying acuity. Manages specimen collection, handling and disposition per hospital policy. Labels blood specimens at patient bedside. Addresses patient and family spiritual and emotional needs with a holistic approach.
Ensures equipment is functioning properly before use and reports malfunctions. Initiates and completes computerized Event Reports for unusual events; reports near misses.
- Assess patient and family education needs based on age/population, developmental level, readiness to learn, understanding, coping mechanisms, and outcome expectations.
- Initiates and incorporates patient/family education into the plan of care and nursing practice. Identifies discharge and follow-up needs using appropriate resources. Communicates updated status and clear information to patient/family to support informed decisions.
- Completes daily routines (crash cart checks, narcotic counts, urine controls, glucometer checks). Maintains a clean, orderly department and stocks supplies. Functions in the charge nurse role as assigned and completes related documentation. Documents procedures, treatments and supplies to reflect appropriate charges.
- Charges supplies and medications accurately at time of use. Responds to Code Blue, Trauma Protocols, Disaster Preparedness and Crisis Intervention. Administers immunizations and flu injections to hospital employees. Completes discharge paperwork for employees. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency with equipment (cardiac monitor, monitor station, IV pumps, warming devices, airway carts, and related systems).
- Completes documentation and assigns acuity level per classification systems. Keeps charge nurses informed of patients waiting. Adheres to patient flow protocol from triage to ED.
- Minimum Education
:
Required ASN;
Preferred BSN. - Minimum Work Experience
:
Required — Demonstrated critical thinking and professional communication; basic computer skills. Preferred — Two years Emergency Department experience. - Required Licenses
:
Current RN license to practice in Wyoming; BLS, ACLS and ENPC or PALS required C or ATCN required within 6 months of hire; CPI required within 6 months of hire.
- Emergency Department and other hospital areas. Irregular hours, meals and breaks. Fast paced and noisy essful situations. Frequent interruptions. Must be on-site at the SJH campus or other facilities to fulfill responsibilities.
- 80-90% of time standing and walking. Intermittent sitting and computer use. Must have sight/hearing abilities. Ability to lift, push, pull or move patients, equipment and supplies; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

All hospital departments, patients, physicians, families and/or friends of patients, community agencies and transferring medical facilities.
