Job Summary

Provides age and population‑specific direct clinical care to neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. Delivers patient care according to the Scope of Service for OPS. Adheres to and practices St. John's Health Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities. Interested and willing to assist with acute and chronic pain procedures.

Essential Functions Patient Care
  • Obtains and reviews all patient data using observational, interviewing, interpretation and critical thinking skills in an age‑specific and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Identifies risk factors and provides for patient safety, implementing measures to prevent injury from environmental hazards.
  • Practices autonomously and consistently with professional nursing standards.
  • Identifies changes in patient status, exercising critical thinking and independent judgment within a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Develops a plan of care that is unique to each patient’s needs, evaluates patient response, and sets measurable goals mutually.
  • Evaluates patient response to pain management interventions and offers alternative pain management therapies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medication action, side effects and protocols. Uses two patient identifiers to give medication safely and accurately according to policy.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care of multiple patients with varying acuity efficiently and positively.
  • Manages specimen collection, handling and disposition, labeling blood specimens at bedside.
  • Uses supplies and equipment within safe parameters, ensuring proper functioning before use and reporting malfunctions.
  • Initiates and completes computerized Event Reports for unusual events consistently, reporting near misses.
Patient and Family Education
  • Addresses spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families using a holistic approach.
  • Assesses education needs based on age/population, developmental level, readiness to learn, understanding, coping mechanisms and outcome expectations.
  • Initiates and incorporates education into the plan of care and nursing practice.
  • Identifies discharge and follow‑up continuity of care needs using appropriate resources.
  • Communicates updated status and clear information to patients/families for informed decisions.
Unit

Specific Duties
  • Assists and completes daily tasks, reviewing OPS schedule to anticipate patient care and departmental needs.
  • Communicates with other departments in a timely, professional manner.
  • Functions as weekend call staffer completing follow‑up calls, add‑ons, cancellations and patient questions.
  • Care for multiple patients in all phases of perioperative care.
  • Facilitates communication with family, physicians and staff regarding status changes, delays or transfers.
  • Notifies physicians of patient/family questions.
  • Plans, sets up and assists with minor procedures (conscious sedation, minor excisions, TRUS/PNB, cystoscopy).
  • Works efficiently moving from task to task to ensure timely OPS flow.
  • Takes initiative to review logs and meeting minutes when absent, incorporating changes into practice.
Requirements
  • Minimum Education:

    ASN required (BSN preferred).
  • Work Experience:

    One year of surgical or peri‑anesthesia experience preferred; at least one year of acute care nursing experience.
  • Computer skills: basic proficiency.
  • Communication: strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Licenses:
    Current RN license in Wyoming; BLS required at hire.
  • Certifications:

    ENPC/PALS and ACLS required within 30 days of hire.
  • Reporting:
    Reports to Perioperative Clinical Supervisor.
Functional Demands
  • Fast‑paced outpatient surgery environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Rapidly changing census and patient acuity; on‑site required.
  • Physical: 75-90% time standing or walking; lift up to 50 lbs, bend or turn patients; 2-3 hrs/day of computer use.
  • Must possess visual and auditory acuity to meet position requirements.
