GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you are responsible for performing various maintenance duties, under limited supervision, to provide a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system. This position is located in Jackson, Wyoming.

- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
- Operates heavy equipment—including single and tandem axle trucks, auger trucks, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems—to remove snow and ice from roadway surfaces
- Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
- Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
- Communicates information to update others’ status and/or process effectiveness
- Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as for training and performance evaluations, and stays up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
- Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
- Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
- Current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment
- Ability to obtain water certifications if necessary
- Ability to obtain certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
- Ability to obtain a certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
- Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
- Ability to obtain a Flagger certification
- Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
- Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
- Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
- Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
- Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
- Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid, and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
- Knowledge of and ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
Education & Experience
- 2–4 years of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
- Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering) and 0–1 year of relative work experience
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire
- Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
- Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time
- Work in adverse environmental conditions which may include but not be limited to rain, snow, heat, and hail
- Ability to walk long periods of time on even and uneven ground
