Overview
The CAD Draftsman / Construction Model Builder supports heavy civil construction operations by producing accurate 3D construction models, machine control files, roadway layouts, and drafting deliverables for highway, roadway, grading, and utility projects.
This role requires experience interpreting civil construction plans and using GPS machine control systems and modeling software commonly applied in heavy highway construction.
This position is one in which a momentary lapse of attention may result in grave and immediate danger to themselves and others; therefore, this position is classified as safety sensitive.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain 3D construction models for roadway, grading, drainage, and utility projects
- Interpret civil engineering plans, specifications, and survey data
- Create and revise CAD drawings, alignments, surfaces, and digital terrain models
- Prepare machine control files for GPS‑guided equipment
- Coordinate with project managers, surveyors, estimators, and field personnel
- Verify model accuracy and resolve discrepancies between plans and field conditions
- Assist with quantity takeoffs and as‑built documentation
- Maintain organized project files and version control
- Support construction operations with layout data and technical drafting assistance
- Associate degree or technical certification in CAD, Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, or related field preferred
- 2+ years of experience in civil drafting, construction modeling
- Proficiency with software such as:
- Trimble Business Center
- AGTEK
- Strong understanding of roadway construction methods and civil plan reading
- Experience with GPS machine control modeling preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Strong communication and problem‑solving skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Experience in Heavy Civil Highway Construction preferred
- Knowledge of DOT roadway standards and specifications
- Experience with earthwork modeling and takeoff calculations
- Familiarity with survey data processing and coordinate systems
- Construction field experience is a plus
