Job SummaryThe Commissioned School Security Officer is responsible for the safety and security of school facilities. The officer serves as a visible deterrent to crime and student rule infractions, detects and reports suspicious or unsafe activities, and works with school administrators to handle situations involving weapons or controlled substances. The officer also educates students in drug and crime prevention, assists in crisis planning, and conducts training for faculty and staff.
A firearm must be carried and handled safely.
- Watch for irregularities such as security breaches, safety hazards, and emergency situations; contact emergency responders as required.
- Report safety concerns, security breaches and unusual circumstances verbally and in writing.
- Remain alert for unauthorized persons and security code violators; approach suspicious persons and notify police as appropriate; may confront and detain violators until police arrive.
- Maintain a physical security presence on site and interact with customers to ensure safety and a pleasant experience.
- Respond urgently to all emergency situations.
- Monitor daily activity to ensure policies and procedures are followed.
- Provide specialized security in complex operational areas requiring specific environmental knowledge.
- Attend before- and after-school activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Stand or walk constantly for up to an entire shift on various surfaces (tile, concrete, carpet).
- Climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during shift.
- Bend or twist at waist, knees, or neck occasionally.
- Lift or carry up to 40 pounds occasionally.
- Run as needed.
- Use both hands and arms for reaching, handling, grasping, or fingering while using phone, computer, notepad, writing reports.
- Use eyes (correctable vision to normal level required) to observe, read, interact with public and coworkers, and view security monitors.
- Work in various environmental conditions, including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain, or heat.
- Maintain constant mental alertness and attention to detail while setting priorities and following up on assignments.
- Maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
- Handle pressure of working with a high volume general public.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent; at least 21 years old; active CSSO License. Previous security experience required; law‑enforcement experience preferred. State Police CSSO training will be provided. Officer must maintain current active status of all required licenses and carry them at all times while on duty.
Other Requirements- Successful completion of pre‑employment background checks.
- Appropriate personal and professional conduct around students, staff, and the public.
- Ability to purchase and maintain equipment (firearm).
- Willingness to submit to initial and random drug screening.
- Pass a psychological evaluation.
- Meet state required firearm training and complete the 60‑hour CSSO certification course.
- Semester stipend will be provided.
