Controller
Job Description
The Controller oversees all financial operations for a growing construction company, ensuring financial accuracy, strong internal controls, and strategic financial guidance. This role manages the full accounting function, leads construction-specific financial processes such as job costing and WIP reporting, and partners closely with leadership and project teams to support profitable growth and sound financial decision-making.
Responsibilities
+ Oversee all accounting and financial operations, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
+ Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records and maintain robust internal controls and accounting procedures.
+ Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
+ Manage construction job costing, including tracking labor, materials, and overhead to support accurate project profitability analysis.
+ Develop, maintain, and review Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion reporting.
+ Monitor project budgets, cost tracking, and financial forecasting to support effective project and company-level planning.
+ Coordinate annual financial audits, tax preparation activities, and regulatory compliance requirements.
+ Manage banking relationships, including reporting and compliance related to bonding requirements and insurance.
+ Prepare cash flow forecasts and financial analyses to support executive management in strategic decision-making.
+ Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team.
+ Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting throughout each project's lifecycle.
+ Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local financial regulations.
+ Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, systems, and reporting to support company growth.
+ Own and continuously refine the accounting function to support a growing construction organization.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
+ Minimum of 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience.
+ At least 3-5 years of accounting experience in the construction industry.
+ Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles and practices.
+ Expertise in job costing and project profitability analysis.
+ Proficiency in percentage-of-completion accounting and WIP reporting.
+ Strong experience in financial reporting and budgeting.
+ Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial statement preparation.
+ Experience supervising and leading accounting staff.
+ Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
+ Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.
+ Effective communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
+ Ability to develop, implement, and maintain internal financial controls.
+ Thorough understanding of GAAP and relevant federal, state, and local financial regulations.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
+
Experience with construction accounting software such as Sage Contractor 100.
+ Experience managing banking, bonding, and insurance reporting relationships.
+ Demonstrated ability to provide strategic financial guidance to executive leadership.
+ Proven track record in a growing company environment, with the ability to build and own the accounting function.
+ Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop team members.
+ Ability to design and refine accounting procedures and process improvements.
Work Environment
This role is based in a construction office environment and requires working onsite five days per week. The Controller works closely with project managers, executives, and accounting staff in a collaborative, growth-oriented setting. The environment is fast-paced and project-driven, with frequent interaction across departments and regular use of construction accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
