Job Summary

Athena Security is seeking an experienced Controller to provide financial leadership and oversight of the company's accounting operations. This part-time role will work closely with our bookkeeper to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the company's financial records and reporting.

The Controller will oversee the monthly and year-end close process, review account reconciliations, monitor cash flow, oversee accounts payable and receivable, manage fixed assets and depreciation, support tax compliance, and ensure appropriate accounting policies and internal controls are maintained.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and experience working with growing companies. This individual should be comfortable reviewing and guiding bookkeeping activities, identifying discrepancies, improving accounting processes, and providing management with reliable financial information and insights.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall accounting oversight and guidance to the company's bookkeeper.
  • Review and approve bookkeeping activities, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial records.
  • Manage and oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements and management reports.
  • Perform and review bank, credit card, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and overall financial performance.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, including depreciation calculations and maintenance of depreciation schedules.
  • Ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisors, and auditors as needed.
  • Support preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax filings and ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and variance analysis.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Identify accounting discrepancies, risks, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Provide financial analysis, reporting, and recommendations to management.
  • Support the company as it scales by improving accounting processes, systems, and controls.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive financial information.
  • Perform other accounting and financial management duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • CPA license strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar role.
  • Experience overseeing or managing bookkeeping functions.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations, fixed asset accounting, and month-end close procedures.
  • Experience with Quick Books Online; experience with Net Suite or other accounting systems is a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience supporting tax compliance, audits, and external accounting partners.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced, growing company environment.
