Overview
The City of Boca Raton is hiring Building Inspectors at three levels (I, II, and III). Inspectors perform technical work inspecting building construction on‑site for compliance with approved plans and applicable federal, state, and city codes.
SalaryBuilding Inspector I:
Starting at $34.20 per hour
Building Inspector II:
Starting at $35.91 per hour
Building Inspector III:
Starting at $37.71 per hour
- Inspect buildings under construction, alteration, repair, and existing buildings for compliance with approved plans and applicable city, county, state, and federal codes.
- Ensure installations and construction are substantially compliant with approved plans and specifications.
- Identify hazardous conditions; issue notices, warnings or stop‑work orders; re‑inspect to verify corrections.
- Prepare accurate inspection reports, maintain records, and testify in court as required.
- Communicate professionally and timely with contractors, property owners, the public, and staff about code requirements, inspections, and corrections.
- Use inspection/permit software and other business systems; learn evolving technologies.
- Participate in on‑call rotation for fire‑incident inspections and perform post‑tropical cyclone damage assessments or other emergency special details.
- Apply appropriate regulations and codes with guidance, as necessary, from the Chief Inspector or Building Official.
- Investigate complaints and respond to inquiries by taking appropriate action and following up.
- Assist in the review and evaluation of building plans for compliance with all applicable codes as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Perform field inspections of complex development sites, systems, work in progress, and completed work under supervision of the Chief Inspector.
- Issue notices of violations for non‑conformance and reinspect when deficiencies are corrected.
- Sub‑classify work by trade (Structural, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical) and perform trade‑specific inspections consistent with certifications.
- Apply codes and regulations with guidance from Chief Inspector or Building Official.
- Perform highly complex inspections, including major construction projects; serve as subject matter expert and provide guidance/mentoring to Inspectors I and II.
- Assist and provide backup to the Deputy Building Official; help review/evaluate building plans for code compliance.
- May be assigned to specialized programs (e.g., Building Recertification Program, Floodplain Management) with duties including program monitoring, enforcement support, data/report compilation, coordination with other departments, and attendance at hearings.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Five (5) years of experience in one or more of the building construction trades.
- Possession of a valid Standard Inspector Certification in an appropriate sub‑category from the State of Florida, Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Building Code Administrator’s and Inspector’s Board, in accordance with Florida Statute Chapter 468.
- Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- State of Florida certification or registration as a contractor qualified to supervise and perform construction work in one or more of the technical sub‑classifications or current licensures as an Architect or Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.
- Uncertified Inspectors are required to obtain a minimum of one (1) valid Standard Inspector Certification within their probationary period in an appropriate sub‑category from the State of Florida. Individuals employed as provisional inspectors shall remain in a probationary employment status until such time as Standard Certification is obtained or for a period of one year, whichever is longer.

- Five (5) years of experience in one (1) or more of the building construction trades.
- One (1) year of professional employment as an inspector employed by an agency with building code regulatory authority.
