Job DescriptionThis position involves clerical support work in receiving and processing solid waste payments for disposal. The role includes explaining rules, regulations, providing customer service, managing waste disposal fees, operating scale systems, and handling cash transactions.
Work is performed according to established routines, procedures, and standing instructions in a booth or office environment with occasional field hours. The schedule includes shift work, early morning, and evening hours, and requires working Saturdays and holidays.
Physical demands include sitting or standing for extended periods and occasional light lifting (≤ 50 lbs). The position also requires using personal computers, calculators, adding machines, and other standard office equipment.
Examples of Work- Weigh vehicles entering the landfill using computerized scale systems.
- Determine appropriate material codes and rates.
- Accept payments in cash, check, or charge transactions; provide receipts for disposal charges.
- Issue change for cash transactions.
- Prepare daily shift balance report and deposit.
- Answer or refer customers’ questions regarding waste disposal.
- Maintain assigned petty cash change fund.
- Confere with supervisors and landfill operator staff regarding operational procedures and issues.
- Respond to telephone inquiries.
- Direct traffic at scale facility.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
- Perform related work as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures of solid waste disposal.
- Knowledge of cash handling practices and procedures.
- Skill in operating computers and various standard office equipment.
- Ability to learn the laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing waste disposal and processing of solid waste payments.
- Ability to receive and process payments.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to communicate rules and regulations effectively to the public.
- Ability to operate personal computer utilizing Paradigm Weigh Station, calculators, adding machines, and other standard office equipment.
- Two (2) years of education and/or experience in clerical support work that includes performing cash transactions, preparing deposit slips, customer service, or preparing computerized reports.
- Probationary period for this class is six months.
