The Public Works Department is actively seeking a Public Works Landscape Designer.

This is technical landscape architectural work, which includes analysis, planning, design, preparation of contract documents, design review and monitoring of construction projects in accordance with principles and practices of landscape architecture, project requirements, and City ordinance. Work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in landscape design which involves the use of specialized skills, which is acquired through a combination of training and considerable on the job experience.
Contacts with others require skills in understanding and/or influencing people and are important in providing client services, including skills of persuasiveness, assertiveness, and sensitivity to others point of view that are required to influence behavior, change an opinion, or turn a situation around. The work is standardized in that tasks are covered by diversified procedures and specialized standards, and because of the changing priorities, or different situations, incumbents have the latitude to consider which of the many procedures or standards should be followed and in what sequence.
The work is performed in an office and field environment where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, somewhat predictable and controllable. Operates a motor vehicle, personal computers using word processing, spreadsheet, database and other related software, engineering scales, distance measuring devices and other standard office equipment. The physical demands consist of driving, sitting, standing, walking, and lifting objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds.
The work is performed under limited supervision where assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, precedents, methods, techniques, standards, and/or well-defined policies, and the worker plans and organizes the work, determines their own priorities, and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and for adherence to established methods, standards, and policies.
- Plans, designs, and supervises improvements for City buildings, facilities, and rights-of-way.
- Prepares landscape and site development designs for projects.
- Prepares designs and specifications appropriate for bidding projects.
- Coordinates design services for landscape architecture and site planning projects.
- Conducts field inspections of projects.
- Conducts quality control inspections of plant material.
- Reviews site drawings and calculations related to landscaping, tree protection, signs and site development regulations.
- Consults with architects, engineers, contractors, and the public concerning sites, plans, landscaping, tree protection, codes, and ordinances.
- Prepares and issues reports, correspondence and procedures.
- Coordinates City landscaping improvement projects.
- Prepares fee proposals for project coordination, site planning and landscape architect services requested for public facilities.
- Interprets rules, regulations, and policies for enforcement of applicable codes and regulations.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
