Responsibilities

Mayo Clinic’s Department of Neurosurgery in Jacksonville, Florida, led by Richard W. Byrne, M.D., is seeking a board‑certified or board‑eligible neurosurgeon with fellowship training in surgical epilepsy and stereotactic & functional neurosurgery.

The successful candidate will join the Department of Neurosurgery within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, an academic tertiary‑care program committed to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

Clinical Focus & Expertise

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in advanced functional neurosurgical procedures, including:

  • Epilepsy surgery
  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Surgical treatment of pain syndromes

Strong clinical skills and a patient‑centered approach are essential.

Academic & Research Expectations

This position offers robust opportunities for academic advancement within a highly collaborative environment.

Required:

  • Demonstrated academic productivity in research and/or medical education
  • Commitment to teaching medical students, residents, and surgical fellows
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Preferred:

  • Participation in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery clinical trials
  • Development of an independent or collaborative research program
  • Consideration for leadership roles based on experience and academic rank

Neurosurgery faculty at Mayo Clinic are actively engaged in education and benefit from rich opportunities for clinical and translational research, supported by established collaborations across Mayo Clinic sites.

Department & Practice Environment

The Department of Neurosurgery includes 12 faculty neurosurgeons and hosts a neurosurgery residency program with two residents per year. The Florida campus completes over 2500 neurosurgical cases each year.

Collaborative clinical and research opportunities are encouraged across all Mayo Clinic locations and offer exposure to one of the nation’s largest neurosurgical clinical volumes between the Arizona, Minnesota, Florida, and Mayo Health System campuses.

Institutional Growth & Opportunity

Mayo Clinic in Florida continues to expand its commitment to transformative care through the Bold. Forward. Unbound. initiative. This growth includes the addition of a new five‑story patient tower, bringing the campus to 419 total beds, and the integration of advanced medical and surgical technologies designed to enhance patient and staff experience.

In July 2025, the campus opened the Duan Family Building, a 228,000‑square‑foot facility that will house the first carbon ion therapy program in the Western Hemisphere, with patient treatments anticipated to begin in 2028 pending FDA approval.

Mayo Clinic has also acquired 201 acres to develop Discovery Coast, a Healthcare Innovation District and Biotechnology Park focused on advancing translational research, academic partnerships, and innovation—particularly in cancer and neurologic disorders. Qualifications
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Neurosurgery (ABNS)
  • Eligible for Florida medical licensure
  • Mid‑career and senior‑level candidates are preferred; however, exceptional candidates at all career stages will be considered
