Specialist, Instructional Program Support in Assistive Technology

Job Summary: The EESS Assistive Technology Support Specialist plays a key role in ensuring equitable access to learning for all students by supporting the integration, implementation, and ongoing use of assistive technology as outlined in a student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This position collaborates with district curriculum teams, classroom educators, and related service providers to embed AT and UDL practices into instructional materials, guide device acquisition processes, and provide both coaching and training that strengthens classroom implementation.

By ensuring that assistive technology is selected, implemented, and supported with fidelity, this role directly contributes to increased student engagement, access, and overall academic performance.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain effective and continuous communication with school personnel and administrators.
  • Make regularly scheduled visits to schools to provide support services and technical assistance as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of in‑serve training for teachers, therapists and other staff.
  • Assume responsibilities for grant writing and working with outside agencies to fund assistive technology.
  • Serve as a liaison with parent organizations, health professionals, and community agencies as appropriate.
  • Provide information and recommendations regarding instructional materials, augmentative equipment and curricula, and assist in ordering them.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date assistive technology information through the internet, catalogues and Assistive Technology Educational Network of Florida (ATEN).
  • Assist and maintain appropriate program records.
  • Provide training and assist in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Assist in the development and revision of district procedures for exceptional student programs and the development of curriculum.
  • Disseminate curriculum and testing materials for verification of student completion of State Student Performance Standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Minimum five (5) years of experience in educating students with assistive technology.

Certifications & Licenses: Florida Department of Education Certification in an area of Exceptional Student Education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • The ability to educate students with communication disorders and disabilities requiring assistive technology accommodation.
  • The ability to coach teachers.
  • The ability to collect data.
  • The ability to advise stakeholders.
  • The ability to participate in IEP meetings.
  • The ability to lead district-wide training.
  • The ability to provide support services and technical assistance to schools.
  • The knowledge to assist in continued improvement, development, and evaluation of curriculum, materials, models of instruction, and augmentative communication equipment for students with communication disabilities.
  • The ability to support the development and refinement of the district’s AT consent process and procedures for acquiring devices.
  • The ability to conduct observations to determine if students require assistive technology support according to ESE Continuum of Supports.
  • The ability to develop and deliver in‑service training for teachers, therapists, and other staff, monitor AT usage trends, and identify areas for expanded support or resource development.
  • The ability to collaborate with district leadership to strengthen AT and UDL systems, processes, and implementation fidelity.
  • The ability to stay current with emerging AT tools, UDL practices, and legal requirements to inform district recommendations.
