Job Overview

The Jacksonville Public Library Department is actively seeking two (2) Customer Experience Librarian – Youth. This lead‑worker level position provides research and reference services, development and maintenance of collections, program development and presentation, reader’s advisory, and outreach to establish community partnerships. The incumbent serves youth aged 0–18 and their families and may act as person on duty as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Provide borrowing, information services, and reference duties in face‑to‑face, virtual, and outreach settings.
  • Design, deliver, promote, and facilitate programs, activities, and events in the library and at outreach engagements.
  • Integrate literacy practices into customer interactions to support youth literacy development.
  • Engage with customers to deliver youth services and connect them to collections, programs, and other library services.
  • Compile data, prepare reports, and present findings orally as required.
  • Stay current with research, trends, and technology related to youth services and demonstrate proficiency in library technical competencies.
  • Monitor and review budget appropriations and expenditures for assigned work activities.
  • Schedule, assign, monitor, and review the work of others, and serve as person on duty as assigned.
  • Participate in the interview process for new staff selection.
  • Train and instruct employees and volunteers regarding library policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Actively seek and utilize feedback, ideas, and recommendations from staff, customers, and community members.
  • Operate standard office and library equipment, including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and peripheral devices.
  • Assist with maintaining appearance standards, reporting facilities issues, and picking up litter on library grounds.
  • Perform related work as required.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Library Science theories, principles, and practices, including classification systems.
  • Knowledge of elementary and secondary school educational trends, child development, and literacy skills.
  • Knowledge of the Library’s organization, operation, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform borrowing, reference, and reader’s advisory services in various settings.
  • Ability to design, deliver, promote, and facilitate programs and events.
  • Ability to engage customers and connect them to library services.
  • Ability to use computer databases, including catalog and circulation systems.
  • Ability to interview and gather data.
  • Ability to schedule, assign, monitor, and review the work of others.
  • Ability to interpret rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to provide customer service in a library setting.
  • Ability to review library materials and recommend purchases.
  • Ability to develop, organize, and conduct training sessions and workshops.
  • Ability to compile and interpret statistical data.
  • Ability to accept feedback and modify service delivery.
  • Ability to prioritize to achieve results within deadlines.
  • Ability to gather information from customers and respond to complaints and inquiries.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations in a non‑judgmental, non‑discriminatory manner.
  • Ability to operate standard office and library equipment.
  • Depending on assignment, ability to travel between various locations.
Requirements
  • Masters’ Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program, OR
  • Masters’ degree in an unrelated field with two years of professional library experience, OR
  • Bachelors’ degree with five years of professional library experience.

Open Requirements:
The probationary period is six months.

Licensing and Certification

Depending on assignment, a valid driver’s license may be required and must be maintained. A City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification may also be required prior to appointment.
