In this role, you will collaborate with preconstruction, detailing, fabrication, and field teams to ensure complete scope coverage, competitive pricing, and successful project pursuits.

Job Responsibilities Preconstruction & Planning

  • Coordinate RFIs with internal teams, engineers, and clients when information is missing or unclear.
  • Participate in site visits to understand field conditions impacting steel erection.
Estimate Development
  • Lead estimates with limited supervision on small to mid-sized projects.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel (beams, columns, bracing) and miscellaneous metals (stairs, handrails, ladders, embeds).
  • Develop estimates including material costs (based on tonnage and market pricing), fabrication labor and shop operations, and erection labor, equipment, and crane requirements.
  • Assist in building unit-based pricing and historical cost data.
  • Take ownership of specific scopes and coordinate across disciplines.
  • Prepare scope clarifications, exclusions, and assumptions.
  • Lead scope review discussions during estimate reviews.
  • Compile complete estimates and support final proposal submission.
  • Assist with the appropriate resources to determine project-specific tax and insurance requirements.
  • Work with project team or contractor to understand project schedule.
  • Assist in developing and leading Estimate Plan meetings.
Steel-Specific Responsibilities
  • Interpret drawings and estimate in accordance with AISC and AWS standards.
  • Understand basic connection concepts, fabrication processes, and erection sequencing.
  • Coordinate with detailing teams on connection assumptions and detailing scope gaps.
  • Evaluate material types (WF, plate, HSS, pipe) and market conditions.
  • Understand impact of coatings (paint, galvanizing) on cost and schedule.
Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from steel suppliers and service centers, coating/galvanizing vendors, erection subcontractors (if applicable), and buy‑out items (joists, decks, grating, etc.).
  • Level and analyze vendor quotes to ensure complete scope coverage.
  • Assist in building and maintaining relationships with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and scope reviews.
Post-Bid & Project Support
  • Assist with project turnover to operations teams.
  • Support change order pricing and cost validation.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement of estimating processes.
  • Assist project management with scope and budget clarification.
Education & Years of Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in accredited construction-related curriculum such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent plus 2 to 4 years of experience; or 7 years of relevant experience in the construction industry.
To Thrive in This Role
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and estimating software (Fabtrol, Tekla EPM – preferred but not required).
  • Ability to read and interpret project documents including drawings and specifications, as well as basic connection details and shop drawings.
  • Working knowledge of steel fabrication processes, erection means and methods, and industry standards (AISC, AWS).
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills.
  • Problem‑solving and analytical thinking.
  • Growth mindset with desire to advance into a senior estimator role.
