Fire Protection Inspector
This professional position involves analyzing, evaluating, recommending modifications to, and approving fire protection plans and systems for new construction and existing structures. The incumbent applies fire protection theories and building code requirements to ensure fire safety compliance.
Responsibilities- Analyze and evaluate fire protection plans and systems.
- Conduct fire safety inspections of construction sites and advise owners and contractors on violations and corrective actions.
- Perform engineering tests and calculations for complex fire safety systems.
- Resolve problems with fire protection plans and systems by applying engineering principles.
- Consult with architects and engineers on design of fire protection systems.
- Provide technical assistance to contractors, developers, and builders.
- Train Fire Inspectors in fire plans review techniques and fire protection systems.
- Advise Fire/Rescue Department officials on technical matters and participate in service improvement initiatives.
- Represent the Department on the Building Code Adjustment Board and other technical committees.
- Demonstrate proficiency in City of Jacksonville competencies and perform related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of fire protection theories, principles, and practices.
- Knowledge of fire prevention methods, codes, and engineering standards for various building types.
- Understanding of Fire Prevention Division rules, regulations, practices, and procedures.
- Ability to analyze, evaluate, recommend modifications, and approve fire protection plans.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret construction drawings.
- Ability to provide technical assistance on construction of fire protection systems.
- Skill in conducting engineering tests and evaluating complex systems.
- Proficiency in inspecting construction sites for compliance and resolving issues.
- Ability to train and guide the work of others and prepare presentations.
- Computer skills, including CAD programs.
- Six (6) years of education and/or experience in fire protection systems, code consultation, design, and inspection.
- Preferred:
Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field from an accredited institution. - Required:
FLA Fire Safety Inspector Certification before appointment and maintained thereafter. - Preferred: NFPA Certified Fire Plan Examiner (CFPE) or CFPS certification.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible for City of Jacksonville public driver certification.
The probation period is six (6) months. This class performs safety‑sensitive functions and is subject to pre‑employment, random, and other drug/alcohol testing in accordance with City policy.
