2027 Engineering Rotational Development Program (ERDP) – Product Development Track

This pipeline posting is limited to candidates who completed a Caterpillar Students & Graduates assignment (e.g., internship, co‑op, student trainee) within the previous 24 months.

The ERDP is an entry‑level program for recent graduates and interns. Through rotational assignments, you’ll develop skills and knowledge that build your future at one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction and mining equipment.

The 12‑ to 18‑month program provides practical experience across multiple engineering teams and technologies. It is a launchpad for your future.

Program Highlights
  • Product Design
    :
    Design components and systems for Caterpillar products, collaborating with cross‑functional teams from concept to production to deliver effective solutions.
  • Simulation/Performance Analysis
    :
    Conduct analyses such as CFD (ANSYS), FEA, 3D modeling, system/subsystem/component design optimization, and performance of engines, aftertreatment, battery, fuel cell, and powertrain systems.
  • Test/Validation/Hands‑on
    :
    Apply mechanical engineering knowledge in test and validation environments, troubleshooting issues and collaborating for optimal results.
  • Controls Development
    :
    Develop and implement control system algorithms using MATLAB/Simulink for engine, machine, and powertrain controllers. Responsible for understanding requirements, implementation, and testing prior to production.
  • Electronic Components
    :
    Design and test electronic control modules and components. Develop PCB layouts, perform digital/analog/power circuit analysis, work with suppliers, and conduct FMEDA documentation.
  • Embedded Software Development
    :
    Develop embedded software in C, C#, and/or C++ for control modules. Includes data‑link communications, sensor/actuator I/O, timing calculations, memory management, and multi‑core design. Also script development in Python and Visual Basic for automation.
  • Software Validation/Verification for Electronic Systems
    :
    Verify functionality of features or control algorithms on HIL or SIL systems. Understand requirements, debug, and validate fixes.
  • Engineering Data Analytics
    :
    Write and analyze code in Python. Apply machine‑learning concepts/tools, statistics fundamentals, and data‑science techniques.
  • Process Engineering
    :
    Apply mechanical, manufacturing, systems, or industrial engineering knowledge to analyze and optimize processes. Leverage problem‑solving and communication skills.

Program Qualifications
  • Must hold an ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Agricultural, or Aerospace Engineering;
    Engineering Technology; or a related technical discipline (degree required before program start).
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher (no rounding).
  • Professional work experience of 12 months or less, excluding internships.
  • Willingness to relocate and travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Campus design or competition team involvement.
