The Vice President of Collections is responsible for strategic leadership and oversight of all collections, recovery, and loss mitigation activities across Community First Credit Union. This role oversees delinquency management, asset recovery, bankruptcies, legal collections, repossessions, OREO disposition, vendor oversight, analytics, and regulatory compliance. The Vice President of Collections ensures portfolio health, operational efficiency, regulatory alignment, and a member‑centric recovery approach while minimizing credit losses.

The position utilizes analytics, market insight, technology, and strategic planning to manage portfolio risk and support the credit union’s financial and member service objectives.

Major Duties + Responsibilities Collections Strategy & Portfolio Oversight

Oversee all delinquency, recovery, and charge‑off activity across consumer, indirect, mortgage, and commercial portfolios. Establish collections and recovery strategies aligned with ALCO risk appetite, credit policy, and financial goals. Monitor portfolio performance trends and recommend proactive risk mitigation strategies.

Collections Operations & Asset Recovery Management

Direct all collections operations including asset recovery, bankruptcies, legal collections, repossessions, titles, and OREO management. Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant handling of delinquent and charged‑off accounts. Develop and maintain collections policies, procedures, and operational standards.

Compliance, Risk & Regulatory Oversight

Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations including FDCPA, Reg F, UDAAP, Bankruptcy Code, BSA, and OFAC. Serve as the primary subject matter expert for collections‑related audits and examinations and lead responses to regulatory findings.

Analytics, Performance & Budget Management

Develop and monitor reporting tools to track delinquency trends, roll rates, recoveries, charge‑offs, and vendor performance. Lead data‑driven decision‑making to improve recovery outcomes. Develop and manage the collections and recovery budget.

Leadership & Talent Development

Lead, coach, and develop the collection team. Foster a culture of accountability, ethical behavior, compliance, and continuous improvement. Ensure appropriate staffing, training, and performance management practices.

Oversee third‑party vendors including collection agencies, attorneys, repossession vendors, and auction partners. Collaborate with Lending, Risk, Finance, Compliance, Operations, IT, and Analytics to align recovery strategy with organizational objectives.

Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Knowledge + Skills Experience

10 years of progressive experience in collections, asset recovery, credit risk, or related functions within a financial institution, including senior‑level leadership experience. Credit union experience preferred.

Education/Certification/Licenses

A bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required. Advanced degree or relevant professional certifications preferred.

Interpersonal Skills

The ability to motivate and influence senior‑level professionals is essential. Strong analytical, conceptual thinking, leadership, and communication skills. Extensive knowledge of collections regulations, recovery practices, and portfolio risk management. Proven ability to lead change, manage complex issues, and communicate effectively at the executive level.

Physical Requirements

Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6‑8 hours per day, when necessary.
