Position SummaryThe Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a strategic member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for the financial health, integrity, and sustainability of the organization. The CFO provides leadership in financial planning, budgeting, accounting, compliance, reporting, risk management, and long-term financial strategy while supporting the organization's mission and growth.
The ideal candidate is an experienced financial leader with a strong background in nonprofit accounting, grant management, and strategic financial planning. This position works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and department leaders to ensure sound financial stewardship and organizational success.
- Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization's mission and strategic goals.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and recommend corrective actions when needed.
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and monthly financial close.
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
- Supervise finance department staff and promote continuous improvement.
- Oversee financial management of government, foundation, and private grants.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations.
- Coordinate the annual independent audit and preparation of IRS Form 990.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity to ensure operational stability.
- Oversee banking relationships and investment activities.
- Manage debt, reserves, and financial risk.
- Present financial reports to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
- Provide financial modeling and analysis for strategic initiatives.
- Support organizational planning, capital projects, and major funding opportunities.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
- CPA designation and/or Master's degree preferred.
- Seven or more years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least three years in a senior management role.
- Nonprofit financial management experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, federal grant compliance, and IRS regulations.
- Experience managing audits, budgets, and financial reporting.
- Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience working with nonprofit boards and finance committees.
- Knowledge of donor-restricted funds and grant reimbursement processes.
- Experience with strategic planning and organizational growth.
- Familiarity with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, Blackbaud Financial Edge, Quick Books Enterprise, or similar ERP platforms.
