The Abstractor's chief responsibility is to collect, maintain, and present reliable data for interpretation and understanding of clinical processes and outcomes using electronic quality and patient safety reporting systems. Utilizes the electronic health record to obtain and/or analyze a variety of information. May serve as the lead System Administrator for one or more applications such as: patient satisfaction, surgical or medical outcomes, on-line event management system, rounding apps, benchmarking and other applications.
Responsible for the abstraction, analysis, interpretation, display, and presentation of a variety of patient safety, risk management, and quality data from a variety of databases. Builds reports and automates manual systems which may include using SQL and Macros. Works closely with hospital and medical staff leadership, management, providers, teams, and trainees to identify opportunities for performance improvement and other special projects.
Researches and incorporates comparisons, trends and benchmarks into data analysis and display. May facilitate and/or coordinate risk management or quality reviews required for compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies including: CMS, Joint Commission, Agency for Health care administration (AHCA), the Department of children and family (DCF), Office of the attorney general. Develops educational materials related to data and applications and trains all levels of staff including leadership, providers, and trainees.
- Performs internal data abstraction as requested, maintaining protocols and procedures to insure current rules, submission deadlines, and practices required by internal and external stakeholders are met. May be required to contact patients/families per program requirements for the purpose of identifying potential issues and opportunities for improvement. Works with Division leaders and staff and others as appropriate to display, analyze, interpret, and present results to a variety of stakeholders including senior leadership, physicians, and staff.
Assists with the development and monitoring of action plans as appropriate. (25%) - Serves as the expert and/or system administrator for one or more assigned databases. Promptly notifies appropriate leaders, staff and/or vendor developers of issues impacting end users. Creates processes that are automated by building macros or other queries that will generate tasks that will be used for reports and forms. Utilizes SQL server reporting services as appropriate to develop and maintain reports for end users that are user friendly.
(25%) - Serves as an educational resource by developing online and written curriculum using principles of adult learning on topics related to quality management, abstraction, patient safety, risk management, and other Division topics for hospital and medical staff leaders, providers, staff and trainees. Provides the training in a variety of ways including online, webex, in person training to groups, or individuals as requested.
(15%) - Develops electronic data capture utilizing various databases to create routine and ad hoc reports. Queries, aggregates and analyzes data from a variety of systems in order to support quality reporting, risk management, patient safety, and performance improvement projects. Creates dashboards, charts, diagrams, and graphics to enable trending and comparisons over time. Presents data and analysis to a variety of groups and teams as requested.
(10%) - As requested facilitates and/or coordinates process improvements and reviews to comply with federal regulatory and statutory compliance. Includes things like CMS audits, inter-rater reliability reviews, root cause analysis, and Code 15 reviews. (10%)
- Supports internal and external survey processes, rounding, and other activities as requested by department leadership. (5%)
- Oversees and manages interfaces, system program updates, and/or revisions to assigned databases that directly impact the local campus. As applicable, ensures that ADT feeds, email servers, human resource files, attending physician files, medication files and other user files required for assigned databases are working properly and are up to date. Monitors end user reports and error reports to insure that the assigned system is running as expected and producing accurate data.

Education:
Bachelor's Degree - Preferred Education: Master's degree in healthcare, informatics, epidemiology, statistics or other related fields
- Required Experience: 1-2 years of experience data abstraction or analysis, preferably within the healthcare industry. Post-graduate degree in healthcare, informatics, epidemiology, statistics or other related fields accepted in lieu of experience
