Clinical Ethicist, Bioethics Program

Job Summary

Baptist Health is hiring a Clinical Ethicist to join the Bioethics Program. This is a full‑time position located on the downtown Jacksonville campus of Baptist Health. The Bioethics Program enjoys broad organizational support and will add two clinical ethicists to a well‑established, collaborative, growing team.

• Receive requests and conduct ethics consultations independently.
• Document consultations thoroughly and timely in the electronic health record.
• Follow up with patient cases after referral.
• Participate in on‑call services on a rotating basis (days, evenings, weekends, holidays).
• Engage in continuous development and quality improvement of the ethics consultation services.
• Track ethics consultations and identify recurring issues for quality improvement.
• Engage in preventative ethics activities (e.g., monthly Bioethics Performance Improvement Case Conferences, unit rounding, moral distress debriefs).
• Provide high‑quality bioethics education throughout the health system for residents, PA/ARNP, medical, nursing, and multidisciplinary staff.
• Conduct clinical ethics research and scholarship, contributing to the literature and presenting at conferences.
• Help develop, review, and revise ethics‑related policies and serve on Health System committees and working groups.

• Master’s degree in ethics, bioethics, philosophy, public health, nursing, or another relevant healthcare field.
• Minimum of one year of clinical experience in an acute care hospital in a similar role.

• PhD (in Ethics or another relevant healthcare area), JD, or MD/DO.
• Clinical Ethics Fellowship.
• Healthcare Ethics Consultant – Certified (HEC‑C) (Required within two years of employment).
• Experience performing ethics consultations in pediatric and adult settings, individually or as part of an ethics consultation team.

Master’s Degree

Doctorate

• Less than one year of clinical experience required.
• Less than one year of relevant equivalent experience in lieu of education required.
• Less than one year of Clinical Ethics Consultation experience required.

• Healthcare Ethics Consultant – Certified (HEC‑C) Preferred.
