This position is a Biological Scientist IV on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Overdose Data to Action:
Limiting Overdose through Collaborative Actions in Localities (OD2A: LOCAL) grant at the Florida Department of Health in Duval County. This position requires advanced skills in the analysis and reporting of surveillance data, integrating and using data to inform decision making, and community partnership building.
- Leads OD2A:
Local surveillance activities in Duval County. Collects, analyzes, evaluates, and presents surveillance data utilizing Epi Info, SAS, SPSS and/or other data analysis and statistical software. - Analyzes surveillance data to help drive improvements in substance use disorder services and harm reduction programs. Identifies gaps in prevention services and which populations are most impacted by lack of access.
- Analyzes linkage to and retention in care surveillance data to monitor individual-level outcomes, as well as whether substance use disorder treatment and harm reduction programs are reaching populations at greatest risk and those that are underserved.
- Presents data at a variety of community meetings to inform decision making related to overdose prevention strategies. Utilizes MERLIN, ESSENCE-FL, FL-DOSE and other disease-based data management and reporting systems to facilitate reporting and analysis.
- Contributes to the development and dissemination of local level substance use and overdose related reports to public health partners. Presents data in both written and oral format to various audiences, provides data for overdose related data requests, and develops county‑specific fact sheets and/or data visualizations based on nonfatal and fatal drug overdose data.
- Manages and updates a public‑facing substance‑using data dashboard.
- Responsible for reporting surveillance activities and findings to CDC.
- Actively participates in discussions of how to best use overdose surveillance findings to inform overdose prevention efforts in Duval County, FL. Participates in local drug prevention task forces to collaborate with local stakeholders to provide surveillance data to inform overdose prevention strategies.
- Attends in‑service, seminars, workshops, and other meetings related to the OD2A grant. Travel to perform duties as described. Complete all mandatory training within required deadlines.
- Ensures accurate and timely submission of Employee Activity Records, Employee Leave and Attendance Records and travel vouchers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of epidemiological methodology, theories, principles, and methods.
- Knowledge of methods for protecting confidential data.
- Knowledge of overdose prevention strategies and evidence‑based treatment options for substance use disorders.
