MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST IV –

Position Overview:

The senior scientist conducts molecular testing of human microbiological pathogens using next‑generation sequencing and other molecular and microbiological methods. The work ensures accurate and timely characterization of microbial agents to support treatment regimens and outbreak containment.

• Perform next‑generation sequencing (pre‑analytical, nucleic acid preparation, sequencing, data analysis) of bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens following validated SOPs.
• Conduct microbiological and molecular methods other than NGS (e.g., Sanger sequencing, qPCR) for rapid analysis, detection, and identification.
• Ensure result accuracy and timeliness, upload data and metadata to analysis software, LIMS (Lab Ware), and relevant databases.
• Serve as laboratory consultant/subject matter expert for sequencing activities, communicating results to public health stakeholders and private providers.
• Apply for and maintain grant funding as directed; maintain instrumentation and quality control/assurance practices.
• Maintain adequate supplies, review SOPs, job aids, and implement changes as needed.
• Perform additional duties as required.

• Knowledge of MS Office and Illumina sequencing platforms.
• Knowledge of testing human microbiological pathogens.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Minimum:
  Hold an existing Florida Clinical Laboratory license or be willing to apply for and maintain one.
• Preferred:
  Bachelor’s degree in a biological science from an accredited institution.
