Terminal Generalist
The Terminal Generalist plays a key role in ensuring the smooth and compliant flow of cargo through the terminal. This position combines customer-facing responsibilities with detailed administrative, operational, and regulatory tasks, including cargo documentation, hazardous materials handling, refrigerated container monitoring, and coordination with government agencies. The role requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to resolve issues quickly to support efficient terminal operations.
Responsibilities include receiving, greeting, and directing customers and visitors in a professional and courteous manner; facilitating the proper delivery of cargo while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and customer service releases; updating hazardous materials information in the Terminal Operating System (TOS) and releasing hazardous cargo to vessels in compliance with all Hazmat regulations and procedures; monitoring and handling refrigerated container temperature discrepancies to ensure cargo integrity;
communicating with governmental agencies for inspections, holds, and releases, and coordinating terminal working hours with Customs and Border Patrol when needed; handling inbound cargo moving in and out of the terminal and validating required forms with Customs; collecting and processing credit card payments from customers at the terminal accurately and securely; troubleshooting gate and Resolution Center issues, including paperwork discrepancies, to ensure cargo flows through the terminal in a timely manner;
assisting in maintaining an accurate and up-to-date UIIA trucker database within the Terminal Operating System; assisting in handling customer claims related to autos, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up; coordinating and assigning equipment for yard transfers and updating the system accordingly to reflect movements and status; understanding, producing, and responding to operational reports and requests, including Dangerous Cargo Manifest reports, container status reports, cargo exception reports, cargo final reports, Port Authority wharfage reports, planned versus actual activity reports, terminal priority reports, and trucker turn time reports;
managing terminal service vendors and accurately coding vendor invoices for processing; supporting management in the effective operation of the cargo terminal by assisting with projects and operational initiatives as needed; providing responsive customer support through email correspondence, phone communication, and in-person interactions; performing administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, scanning, and booking to support logistics and documentation processes; and preparing and maintaining reports and documentation related to import logistics and export documentation in accordance with established procedures.
