Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse (RN) Diabetes Nurse Educator is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care. The role supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care, fulfilling the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients, providing leadership through preceptor, informal and formal roles, and quality improvement efforts.

The RN delegates patient care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. Excellent communication, mentoring, teaching, and committee participation skills are essential. The position is eligible for TN sponsorship; F1 status holders with post‑completion OPT may apply. Visa Screen or equivalent certification and state licensure are required.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program.
  • Effective March 1, 2017, incumbents who do not have their BSN are required to complete their degree by December 31, 2022.
  • If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
  • If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.
  • Prior experience in diabetes education, endocrinology, transplant, or chronic disease management preferred.
  • Experience providing patient education and supporting patients with insulin therapy, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitoring systems preferred.
  • One year RN experience within the last five years preferred.
Additional Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required; experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on‑call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communication, and excellent critical thinking skills.
License and Certifications
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • Arizona and Florida – Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Midwest – Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • American Red Cross Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential required within two years of employment at ADA‑certified sites; preferred at non‑ADA certified sites. Listing of current recognized ADA‑certified programs: (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..
  • Position may not require current BLS competency if not on campus, as determined by the work area.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
