Responsibilities
The RN in the Operating Room circulates and coordinates the surgical team in all aspects of OR activities, providing for optimum perioperative nursing care to patients. The OR RN may be asked to scrub as needed and functions as the patient's advocate.
Functions within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, coordinating nursing care, providing direct patient care, patient/family education, transitions of care, and quality improvement.
- Accountable for coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care.
- Supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care.
- Functions within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
- Provides leadership through preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
- Delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources.
- Possesses excellent communication skills, skillful in mentoring and teaching, and may participate on committees or projects.
All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with an RN start date after April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date.
All entry‑level associate degree registered nurses with an RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing program as stipulated at time of hire.
- Must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet a 45‑minute on‑call requirement.
- Graduate of a nursing program; baccalaureate preferred.
- Preferred one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Computer skills required; prior experience with EMR preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends and on‑call.
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations.
- Demonstrated leadership, effective communication, and excellent critical thinking skills.
- Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
- Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
- Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
