Position: Facilities Maintenance Technician, Carpenter (Full-Time)

The Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician, Carpenter (Full-Time) to join our team.

This role combines hands-on carpentry with general facility maintenance in a fast-paced environment dedicated to caring for both guests and animals. In this role, you will apply your craft to maintain, repair, and enhance our facilities. From building and remodeling structures to installing fixtures and performing precision repairs, your work ensures that our zoo remains safe, functional, and visually engaging for visitors and staff alike.

You will collaborate with team members to prioritize projects, address urgent needs, and contribute to the smooth operation of our campus.

What you bring...
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of carpentry experience in a similar role.
    • Proficient in rough and finish carpentry and other areas of residential construction/remodeling.
    • Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers etc.).
    • In-depth understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction.
  • A valid driver’s license and clear driving record to operate organizational vehicles.
  • Availability to accommodate a flexible schedule, including extended hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Ability to work a schedule Sunday
    - Thursday (7:30 AM- 4:30 PM) with flexibility as operational needs arise.
  • Ability to work a schedule that includes a Saturday or Sunday.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of a 8 hour shift, including working outdoors in Florida weather, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Pre-Employment Requirements:
    Candidates selected for this position must successfully complete all pre-employment screenings prior to their start date. Compliance with these requirements is mandatory to ensure the safety of staff, animals, and visitors. These include:

A plus...
  • Experience in apartment, building, or multi-unit maintenance.
  • Experience in the commercial/residential construction field.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to consistently remain on your feet for 6-8 hours on shift.
  • Ability to walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and reach.
  • Visual acuity for reading, writing, and observing surroundings, and auditory acuity for communication.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of a 6–8 hour shift, including working in Florida weather, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds for short distances.
  • Ability to work with a variety of animals including invertebrates, reptiles, and small companion mammals.
  • Ability to safely operate a motorized cart.
WORK CONDITIONS
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, sunlight, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Potential exposure to allergens (dust, animal dander, pollen, etc.), blood borne pathogens, zoonotic diseases and injuries from animals.
  • Irregular work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays are sometimes required.
  • Exposure to hazards such wildlife, waste, equipment, loud noises, chemicals, and heights.
