Job Overview
The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi‑Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.
Responsibilities- Operate and generally maintain all types of light and heavy equipment, both diesel and gasoline engine powered.
- Know the quadrant of operation, read and load charts, understand structural stability of cranes, and manage dynamic and shock loading.
- Select, secure, and adjust suitable chains, cables, slings, hooks, and other lifting and securing devices to properly load/unload and balance a variety of equipment moved by mobile cranes.
- Perform safety checks on cranes, forklifts, aerial platforms, and other equipment before and after operations.
- Operate mobile hydraulic cranes, motor vehicles, heavy trucks, and truck‑trailers (4‑ton and over) to transport materials and equipment within the installation.
- Operate ground support equipment as required to accomplish work assignments.
- Fabricate wire rope and perform proof‑load equipment assessments.
- Operate mechanical boom and cable or tower and cable equipment to lift and move materials, machines, or products in many directions.
- Ensure your personal safety, your co‑worker’s safety, and the customer’s safety.
- Support various groups by providing access to work areas, including rigging, scaffolding, pick‑boards, spider staging equipment, and fall protection.
- Maintain knowledge of local, state, and federal guidelines for safely rigging and moving objects.
- Work from written, electronic, and/or verbal instructions, including blueprints, diagrams, schematics, vendor manuals, and specifications and codes.
- Obtain and maintain certifications, licenses, and permits necessary to operate various types of equipment, including forklifts and aerial platforms.
- Maintain logs, records, charts, and other documentation as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent and technical training in the applicable area of expertise.
- Three (3) years of related experience.
- NCCCO certification and Class A CDL with hazmat qualification (preferred).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to hold necessary security clearances.
- Ability to obtain and maintain valid certifications, licenses, and permits required for performance of assigned tasks.
- Ability to interact effectively with co‑workers and managers.
- Valid U.S. driver's license.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency/green card (if offered a position).
- Visual and physical contact of rigging related systems, hardware, and articles.
- Climbing, crawling, bending, and body mobility to lift, carry, and exert pressure up to 100 lbs.
- Successfully pass a high‑worker physical test.
- Ability to climb stairs for equipment troubleshooting.
- Wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required.
- Extended periods of sitting or standing may be required.
- Access to remote structures and ability to evacuate quickly in emergency.
- Work performed in environments that meet NASA, OSHA, and company safety standards.
- Both indoor and outdoor environments, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
- Walking on uneven terrain (paved, gravel/rocks, dirt/sand) to access various locations on site.
- Use of personal protective equipment (hard hats, safety glasses, safety shoes/boots).
- Operating fall protection equipment.
- Operating forklifts and pendant cranes.
- Using hand tools.
- Using personal computers and related peripherals for documentation, including CMMS systems such as Maximo and Solumina.
- Full‑time work hours.
- Occasional overtime, including weekend work, depending on tasks.
- Dependable and punctual.
- Shift work may be required.
- Accurate written and verbal communication.
- Travel to support position requirements, including airline travel if necessary.
