Position: Utilities Service Worker (Wastewater Maintenance)

General Description

This is a skilled position requiring manual work and the application of skills and knowledge achieved through education and experience within the field of water and wastewater maintenance. The position will be classified as Level I or II depending on certifications held and higher level of knowledge, skills, and abilities. Work is carried out under the direct supervision of the Utilities Maintenance Crew Leader.

Job Functions
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on sewer collection, water distribution, reclaim distribution systems, and lift stations.
  • Repair and maintain water distribution, sewer collection, and reclaim distribution systems.
  • Repair and/or replace manholes, utility piping, fire hydrants, water/sewer meters, water service lines, and air release valves and structures.
  • Open and close water valves; service line flow tests and clear blocked service lines.
  • Complete various forms, work orders, reports, correspondence, daily worksheets, or other documents.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE), hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, transit level, specialized equipment, boom truck, portable generator, dump truck, vacuum combination truck, heavy equipment.
  • Interact positively with the public and assist and respond to residents' inquiries.
  • Report any safety issues to the supervisor immediately.
  • Sweep and clean work areas. Ensure equipment is properly maintained, including fuel and oil maintenance.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections and notify supervisor of any issues and determine if the equipment needs to go to Fleet for repair.
  • Work frequently on a utility crew truck, both on and off road.
  • Work diligently while maintaining safety and quality in all aspects of job performance. Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Perform general manual labor work as required.
  • Perform any other duties or tasks that may be assigned.
  • Review and interpret GIS data and construction plans.
  • Perform manhole, lateral and gravity system visual inspections as well as inspections using specialized equipment.
  • Perform installation and testing of water meter and backflow prev enters, troubleshoot and repair lift station electrical panels.
  • May operate a variety of light-duty and heavy-duty equipment, including Vac-Con truck.
  • Perform various general maintenance duties including pressure cleaning, landscaping, and equipment inspections.
  • Conduct meter reading and service line flow testing.
  • Respond to and repair service leaks and main breaks.
  • Perform fire hydrant flow testing, flushing, painting, and inspections. Also install and repair force main and gravity mains, manholes, and laterals.
  • Perform utility locating via Sunshine 811 one call system, as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Level I
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Skilled in performing heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, nights, holidays, and 24-hour stand‑by duty, as required.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Use tools and equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work environment.
  • Adhere to all safe working practices including work zone traffic control, highway safety rules and regulations, and take effective precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents.
  • Properly use tools and equipment.
  • Know power tools and heavy equipment, their functions, and capabilities.
  • Communicate in English, both orally and in writing; prepare reports as required.
  • Apply basic mathematical calculations.
  • Establish and maintain effective and amiable relationships with leadership, supervisors, residents, customers, employees, other departments, and agencies.
