This is skilled craft work in the maintenance and operation of public swimming pools and fountains. The job requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of pool electrical and mechanical equipment followed by specialized equipment and skills learned on the job or through training. The work is semi‑routine, performed primarily outdoors and involves moderate physical activity, lifting or moving objects weighing more than 50 pounds, working at heights greater than five feet, and handling hazardous chemicals.
The position can work up to 40 hours a week. The program start date is May 16, 2026. Training dates:
March 7 and 8, 2026.
- Conduct daily inspections of pool water for proper chemical balances, bacteria levels, and pH; test temperature of heated pool water.
- Apply chemicals as appropriate to maintain proper pH and chemistry levels; assure safety of pool water.
- Clean and maintain the swimming pool, surrounding areas and related equipment: brush and vacuum pools, hose down decks, backwash filters for water clarity, clear pool drains, gutters, and deck drains.
- Maintain daily records related to pool maintenance, repairs, safety incidents, water test results, and other assigned activities.
- Diagnose and communicate needed repairs for public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems, pumps, and playground equipment.
- Maintain manual and/or automated records and prepare reports.
- Pick up trash and clean public swimming pools, restrooms, and facility areas.
- Transport and store hazardous chemicals.
- Operate and inspect tools and equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs.
- Operate vehicles to transport materials and equipment.
- Operate a computer to input and retrieve data.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
- Perform related work as required.
- Techniques, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment associated with public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
- Basic electrical theory.
- Occupational hazards and safety procedures associated with the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Tools and equipment used in the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment in public swimming pools.
- Ability to diagnose needed repairs and maintain electrical and mechanical equipment in public swimming pools.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment in public swimming pools.
- Ability to operate assigned vehicles.
- Ability to prepare and/or oversee the preparation of manual and/or automated records and reports.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to operate a computer to input and retrieve data.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations including calculating volume and square footage.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to lift or move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
- One year of education and/or experience in the maintenance and operation of mechanical equipment, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps (preferred).
- A valid driver’s license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment.
- Must qualify for and maintain a City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver during employment.
