Pool Services Technician

This is skilled craft work in the maintenance and operation of public swimming pools and fountains. The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of pool electrical and mechanical equipment. It involves the use of specialized equipment and skills learned on the job or through training. The work is performed outdoors and involves moderate physical activity, lifting or moving objects over 50 pounds, working at heights, and handling hazardous chemicals.

• Conduct daily inspections of pool water for proper chemical balances, bacteria levels, and pH; test temperature and apply chemicals as appropriate.
• Cleans and maintains the swimming pool, surrounding areas and related equipment; brush, vacuum pools, hose down decks, backwash filters, clear drains.
• Makes daily record entries for maintenance, repairs, safety incidents, and water test results.
• Diagnoses and communicates needed repairs and maintains pool equipment and playground equipment.
• Maintains manual and/or automated records and prepares reports.
• Picks up trash and cleans public swimming pools, restrooms, and facility areas.
• Transports and stores hazardous chemicals.
• Operates and inspects tools, equipment, and performs minor adjustments and repairs.
• Operates vehicles to transport materials and equipment.
• Uses a computer to input and retrieve data.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
• Performs related work as required.

• Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment for public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
• Basic electrical theory knowledge.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures for maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment in public pools.
• Knowledge of tools and equipment used for maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment in public pools.
• Ability to diagnose needed repairs and maintain electrical and mechanical equipment in public pools.
• Ability to operate tools and equipment for repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment in public pools.
• Ability to operate assigned vehicles.
• Ability to prepare and/or oversee the preparation of manual and/or automated records and reports.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to operate a computer to input and retrieve data.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations including volume and square footage.
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to lift or move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
• One year of education and/or experience in the maintenance and operation of mechanical equipment, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
• Work location will be Friendship Fountain and support fountains and splash pads city wide.

• The probationary period for this classification is six months.

• A valid driver’s license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment.
• Must qualify for and maintain a City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver.
• A valid Certificate of Competency in Pool Operation, approved by the Public Health Division, is required within 6 months of employment and must be maintained.
