Position:
Traffic Signal Repairer – Public Works Department.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Base pay with overtime and shift differential – 1.5x base hourly rate for hours over 40 per week.

Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain and repair traffic signal system equipment.
  • Locate, diagnose and correct malfunctions in solid state, digital and analog traffic control equipment, including traffic lights, time clocks, traffic signal controllers, load switches, loop detectors, pedestrian push buttons and school zone flashing lights.
  • Install new traffic signal control cabinets using multi‑conductor color‑coded cables.
  • Program controllers, monitor and replace defective equipment.
  • Inspect work reports to ensure completion within an assigned area.
  • Determine traffic signal coordination using time‑space diagrams.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and necessary repairs on traffic signal equipment.
  • Check relays, controller timing and wiring.
  • Inspect equipment installed by private contractors for compliance with FDOT and COJ specifications.
  • Assist in construction of traffic control devices by signal construction crews.
  • Operate lift trucks and other power, mechanical, and hand tools.
  • Train, assign and review work of personnel.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of education and/or experience in electricity, electronics, or traffic signal installation/maintenance/repair.
  • Knowledge of installation, maintenance, and repair techniques for traffic signal equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in the process.
  • Solid‑state and digital circuitry and controller knowledge.
  • Basic electrical theory and safety precautions.
  • Ability to interpret time‑space diagrams for traffic signal coordination.
  • Ability to replace or repair signal cable, and distinguish colors in wiring and cables.
  • Physical ability to lift, load, unload and transport signal heads up to 85 lb.
  • Ability to read and apply written job materials and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to operate power, mechanical, hand tools and motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) > 8,000 lb.
Licensing/Certification/Registration
  • Valid Class E driver's license required prior to appointment and must be maintained.
  • Must qualify for and maintain Public Driver certification.
  • IMS A Level I Traffic Signal Certification must be completed within 12 months from probationary appointment;
    Level II within 24 months.
Other Requirements
  • Six‑month probationary period.
  • Safety‑sensitive functions requiring pre‑employment and random drug/alcohol testing as per city policy.
