THE ROLE
We are looking for a player coach. Someone whose first instinct, when a teammate is stuck, is to pull up a chair.
Advantage builds the platforms that welcome new students and employees at more than four hundred colleges, universities, and organizations, including Harvard, UCLA, and Florida State.
You come in as a Team Lead, not as a senior developer who might grow into one. Our team is growing from four engineers to seven this year, so this is a real leadership role from your first week.
Roughly seventy percent hands on engineering, thirty percent leading. A team this size does not need a full time manager. That balance shifts toward leadership as we grow.
WHAT YOU WOULD OWN Real accountability, from your first week- The engineers on your team. Feedback, development plans, and calibration against our career framework. Their growth is the result you are measured on.
- Code review as coaching. The standards the team writes against, and reviews that teach rather than only gate.
- How work gets sized. Estimation and capacity modeling that turns a schedule into a forecast. This one is squarely yours to improve.
- Modern content platform work. Umbraco major version upgrades and backoffice extension on Lit and Web Components. We know that is a real shift from the older AngularJS backoffice.
- Front end and integration craft. Type Script, responsive work, WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility, and integration reliability.
- Production escalation for your team's surface area, including root cause analysis.
- Seven or more years shipping production software, most of it in .NET and C#.
- You have led engineers, formally or informally, and can name someone who got better because of you.
- You still write and ship production code, and you want to keep doing it.
- You have owned a delivery commitment to a date and been in the room when it slipped.
- Strong SQL Server, front end, and integration experience.
Helpful, not required: management training, which we will fund if you have not had it. We moved it out because it screened out the engineers we want most. Also useful:
Umbraco or a comparable .NET CMS, design system work, Azure and CI/CD.
- Mentoring is the part of your week you look forward to, not the part you fit in around real work.
- You want the title and the accountability now rather than eventually.
- You have opinions about how a team estimates, reviews, and defines done.
- You are looking to move fully off the tools. Most of this role is still engineering.
- You want leadership as a title rather than as work. The people part here carries real consequences.
- You need a large organization to lead. Your span is a handful of engineers.
Our career framework runs two tracks, and the management fork is explicit and opt in. Engineers who move into management and later want to return to the individual contributor track can do so without loss of standing. As the team grows, this role is the intended path into a dedicated management position.
You will be coached by our Director of Technology and Director of Engineering, who bring more than forty-five years of combined consulting and Fortune 500 experience. Leading people is a craft, and we treat it that way.
